View Full Version : Soviet Socialist Republic anthems

As everyone probably knows, each republic in the USSR operated in theory like its own country, just in a federation. Besides having their own miniature governments and communist parties ('cept the Russian SFSR) structured like the Soviet federal government and party, all of them also had anthems with the exception of the Russian SFSR (since I doubt "GREAT MOTHER RUSSIA SHINES FOREVER UNDER LENIN'S CRIMSON BANNER" or whatever would be taken very well by non-Russians.) Some of them are pretty good.

The Karelo-Finnish SSR's anthem only exists in MIDI format since it didn't exist by the time of those vocal recordings above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zU6ibvfwjA
And, in case you forgot what the Soviet anthem itself sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdVTVR-j0Q
I like the Turkmen SSR anthem for some reason.

Personally i dont really like anthems. But, when you get to the 'street level' songs and "proletarian battle hymns" then yeah, lets talk.
speaking of which, Hannes Wader > Ernst Busch. Sure Busch may have written and co-written many and covered many more but seriously.

The GDR's anthem was indeed good although, as noted, it was never a SSR.
I think we can give an honorary mention to the Tuvan People's Republic since it was later incorporated into the USSR (and when independent only had diplomatic relations with the USSR and Mongolian People's Republic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7hc6CvLWiE

Sounds like a song from a cheap Chinese soap opera/Romance of the Three Kingdoms form the 80's.

Link didn't work for me. My vote for best anthem goes to Aufstanden Aus Ruinen/DDR Lied.

While we're on the subject of socialist anthems, the Viet Cong's one was good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K8okWdJ2xg

Thanks for posting these, Ismail. I had never heard the anthem of Soviet Karelia before, despite being of (finnish) karelian heritage myself - my parents grew up just across the border from there, but of course back then the border was much more tightly closed.
My mom and dad, however, visited the USSR several times, being members of the Finnish CP for a time and so on - but I think that was mainly trips to Leningrad and Moscow.

I've always found the Karelo-Finnish SSR very interesting. Understanding Finnish myself, seeing some of the shit from there, such as the emblem, can be pretty cool because you can actually understand it and maybe relate to it more.
Here are the lyrics for the Karelo-Finnish SSR:
Finnish:
Oma Karjalais-suomalaiskansamme maa,
Vapaa Pohjolan Neuvostojen tasavalta.
Kotimetsäimme kauneus öin kajastaa
Revontultemme taivaalta leimuavalta.
Neuvostoliitto on voittamaton,
Se kansamme suur-isänmaa ijät on.
Sen Tienä on Kansojen Kunniantie,
Se Karjalan Kansankin voittoihin vie.
Isänmaa Kalevan, kotimaa runojen,
Jota Leninin Stalinin lippu johtaa.
Yli kansamme uutteran onnellisen
Valo kansojen veljeystähdestä hohtaa.
Neuvostoliitto on voittamaton,
Se kansamme suur-isänmaa ijät on.
Sen Tienä on Kansojen Kunniantie,
Se Karjalan Kansankin voittoihin vie.
Kotimaamme loi uudeksi kansamme työ,
Tätä maata me puollamme kuin isät ammoin.
Sotasuksemme suihkavat kalpamme lyö.
Asemahdilla suojaamme Neuvosto-Sammon.
Neuvostoliitto on voittamaton,
Se kansamme suur-isänmaa ijät on.
Sen Tienä on Kansojen Kunniantie,
Se Karjalan Kansankin voittoihin vie.
English:
Our land of the Karelian-Finnish peoples,
Free northern republic of Soviets!
Our forests' beauty by night is reflected
From our blazing skies of aurora borealis.
The Soviet Union is invincible,
It is the great fatherland of our people forever.
Its path is the glorious path of the People
It takes the people of Karelia, too, to the victories.
Kaleva's fatherland, runes’ native land,
That is led now by the banner of Lenin and Stalin.
The light of the people’s brotherhood star is shining
Over our industrious happy people.
The Soviet Union is invincible,
It is the great fatherland of our people forever.
Its path is the glorious path of the People
It takes the people of Karelia, too, to the victories.
Our people's labor revived our homeland,
We defend this land as our fathers used to do.
Our skies rustle, our swords strike.
With military strength, we protect the Soviet Sampo.
The Soviet Union is invincible,
It is the great fatherland of our people forever.
Its path is the glorious path of the People
It takes the people of Karelia, too, to the victories.
