A white Florida man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly firing eight or nine shots into a car full of black teens after an argument over loud music, killing one of them.
The Florida Times-Union reports (http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2012-11-28/story/man-accused-killing-jacksonville-teen-charged-second-degree-murder) that 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis of Jacksonville was allegedly shot and killed by 45-year-old Michael David Dunn of Satellite Beach Friday night in a Gate gas station parking lot on Southside Boulevard in Jacksonville.
The Orlando Sentinel reports (http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-11-27/news/os-teen-shot-dead-loud-music-20121126_1_gun-collector-argument-over-loud-music-michael-dunn) that Dunn and his girlfriend were in Jacksonville attending a wedding and had stopped at the gas stations convenience store. According to Jacksonville Sheriffs Lt. Rob Schoonover, Davis and several other teenagers were sitting in a sport utility vehicle in the parking lot when Dunn pulled up next to them and asked them to turn down their loud music.
Lt. Schoonover said that Davis and Dunn exchanged words, then Dunn pulled out a gun and shot at the car eight or nine times, hitting Davis, who was sitting in the back seat of the SUV, twice. No one else was hit. Dunn and his girlfriend then allegedly drove off, fearing that they had encountered gang members and that more of them would show up. Witnesses recorded their license plate number.
Dunn was arrested Saturday at his Brevard County home and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
CNN reports (http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/26/us/florida-music-shooting/index.html) that Dunn told police that he had felt threatened by the teens response to his request to turn down their music. Dunns lawyer, Robin Lemonidis, told CNN that Dunn saw the barrel of a shotgun in the window of the SUV and that the teens were threatening him and his girlfriend. According to Dunn, as the teens motioned they were opening the door, he reached for his gun and shot in self-defense.
When all the evidence has been flushed out, I believe that it will be extremely clear that Mr. Dunn acted as any responsible firearm owner would have under the same circumstances, Lemonidis said.
But no gun was found in the teens vehicle.
The case has brought comparisons with the Trayvon Martin (http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar/23/nation/la-na-nn-trayvon-martin-20120323) shooting, which also occurred in Florida. In February, Sanford neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black teen as he walked from a store to his grandfathers home in a gated community. The case, which has not yet gone to trial, brought national attention to so-called stand your ground (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/the-political-battle-over-stand-your-ground-laws/2012/03/22/gIQAVcJ2VS_blog.html) self-defense laws, which allow gun owners to use deadly force when they reasonably believe such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to themselves or others.
Lemonidis said that the two cases are not comparable.
There are no comparisons to the Trayvon Martin situation, she told (http://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/28/us/florida-music-shooting/index.html) CNN, adding that her client is no vigilante.
Ron Davis, the victims father, told WAWS that he wants justice served, whether it be through the legal system or to God.
Gods going to punish him for that, so me, I dont want to do anything to him.
Jordan Davis will be buried (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timesunion/obituary.aspx?n=jordan-davis&pid=161275675&fhid=5946) in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia on Saturday.

His defense is so messed up. Of course he felt threatened, racist old white men feel threatened at the very mere presence of young black men all the time, that doesn't mean it is warranted though because their perceptions are skewed by hatred. If it were white kids listening to loud music and if the white kids told him to fuck off, I bet you anything he wouldn't have pulled a gun on them.

People in Florida seem very trigger-happy to me.
