A Hungarian far-right politician urged the government to draw up lists of Jews who pose a "national security risk", stirring outrage among Jewish leaders who saw echoes of fascist policies that led to the Holocaust.

Márton Gyöngyösi, leader of Hungary's third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament.
Opponents have condemned frequent anti-Semitic slurs and tough rhetoric against the Roma minority by Gyöngyösi's party as populist point scoring ahead of elections in 2014.

I'm not very surprised. I haven't been keeping up on the situation for too well, but hasn't Hungary had a very reactionary government for the past several years?

Budapest is supposedly Europe's "anti-semitism capital"

I've been there and it's a pretty nice city I guess. Friendly people. Definitely a worrying far-right presence though.

The current party that beat the neoliberal socialist party, Fidesz, has some bad reactionary tendencies. Interestingly it got into power by appealing to people's frustrations with the austerity implemented by the socialist party, claiming they'd reverse them. Jobbik is far, far worse though they are technically not in the government. IIRC even the grave of one of the more "moderate" leaders of Cold War Hungary, János Kádár, had his grave dug up and corpse stolen by far-right groups a few years back.

Much like Golden Dawn in Greece they try to skirt around the fact that they're more or less the ideological successor to that country's nazi-era party, the Arrow Cross Party.

Even without the direct input of Jobbik Fidesz does enough bs on their own. They ended up passing a constitution that was pretty much criticized by the whole of the EU and Jobbik didn't vote for it solely because they felt it didn't go far enough in nationalist bullshit. There's a thread about their constitution nuttyness here:

Unfortunately I sense that due to the guy requesting this list in relation to the Gaza war, it might invite the ever idiotic attempts to compare criticisms of the Israeli government from other people to antisemitism.

Thanks for the information.

This seems to be a recurrent trend through Europe: the left-of-centre party implementing austerity causing displeasure and bringing the right to power who.. does the same thing. If only we could start breaking people of their illusions of the electoral system since it doesn't seem like anyone is ever going to figure it out on their own until the power turns off or some drastic shit like that.

Unfortunately it's inevitable that critics of Israeli nationalism will always face the anti-semitic straw man.
