What current or recent trends, changes, movements and events make you hopeful for radical change? This can be anywhere in the world.

For one - the emergence and growth of movements and organisations that seek in some sense to transcend the cash nexus not only in practical terms today but as a long term social objective. For another - or at least one hopes, the growing realisation within the the Left generally that there can be no state capitalist road to socialism and that state capitalism has proven to be a disaster and dead end from the point of view of radical change.

Similar to Robbo, I am encouraged by the fact that many young leftists are rethinking things and questioning the tried and failed policies of the past.

You don't like it that people are paying attention to history?

I like it when people pay attention to history, but not when history is reduced to propaganda. Let us take as an example historical events from the Iberian peninsula, Barcelona specifically. There are some Marxist-Leninist who would still maintain that Andres Nin was a Trotskyite agent working surreptitiously for the advancement of the forces of fascism. To my mind that is propaganda based upon demonstrable historical falsehoods. OTOH I believe there is much to be learned from the Spanish Civil War era as long as intellectual honesty and historical integrity are respected.

People getting disillusioned with liberalism. Nothing makes me happier, except them becoming revolutionary socialists.

Usually rallies where people who have no idea what socialism is, are talking about very militant things like strikes, solidarity with immigrants (especially when whites or blacks do this), and boycotting the war effort. It implies I have a lot more in common with them than I do with most leftists.
