I want to start a Mutual Aid Society in my local area.

I suppose its first and main function would be a mutual credit union (LETS) but what else could it do?
Also how to begin organising it?

I would say the first step would be to put out a call for a planning meeting to gauge interest. I have never heard of a Mutual aid society but I can imagine what it might be. Are you looking to model it after or are inspired by a specific historical example?

Yes I suppose that is the way I should start but I'm not quite sure what medium to use to reach a local interest. I haven't really got any specific model in mind, maybe something like Twin Oaks (http://www.twinoaks.org/) or less intensely a LETS (http://www.localexchange.org.uk/new/index.php).

I'm sure there are already credit unions that exist in your area. Why would you need to make another one? And do you or anyone you know have experience running one? If not, then why do you think you are qualified to start one?

There is a LETS in a town quite near me, I emailed to join them and they said I was too far away and suggested I make my own..
I should add I am studying web development and could probably code up a web based credit system that would be much superior to the paper based systems that most LETS use.
