Here's a website that tracks down and exposes racists online, posting their names and info. I for one am all for it:

There is a difference between being unashamed and reckless; the former is a mark of pride while the latter is something which can get you killed. These lists are dangerous so do not expect that nothing will happen if you ever get your name on one; if reactionaries have even one solid bit of info on you that could serious mess up your life.

What's the reasoning here? Of course rightist fucks do this sort of 'name and shame' shit all the time. Just look at that repulsive 'redwatch.com'. Doesn't mean it can't be used for good things.
I for one am all for confeds being shown up to the rest of the world for the crypto-fascistic pigs they truly are.
Seriously, though. "The South will rise again"? I have ancestors who were slave-trading wankers, but I don't jerk off to them in my living room while watching videos of non-europeans being beaten by police over youtube. Absolute pigs.

They can probably do this with a little effort as it is, but the fascists can't, so I'd be more worried about that use of such tech.

Actually, in terms of digital defence and intelligence the United States are quite far behind most modern developed countries.

Shit... this the great.
Also, on all the talk about lists, the idea behind this tumblr page is nothing new.
The ruling class has made lists of leftist political dissenters since day 1.
This isn't really giving anyone in high authority any ideas.
They've had this shit figured out since the Red Scare.
Look at this site, all our info could be extracted right now if it was necessary.

This.
Anyways I think that the whole concept of public shaming for racism through the internet is stupid. Some dumb 15 year old writes something about "niggers" based on what his parents have told him on his Twitter/Facebook and for the rest of his life a google of his name will lead to that, no matter if he takes back his views or even really believed them. Also there will probably be a lot of public shaming if it gets too out of hand that fucks up his social life, considering they'd be just a kid.
I'm probably biased though, when you google my full name you get a story about me getting arrested.

How can you really have a circlejerk over this kind of stupid public shaming? Who actually gets mad enough by someone saying something stupid they need to catalog it and expose it to the whole world? These people are 14/15/16 they don't know how the world works and this is just going to fuck them over in the future, get them expelled from school, etc.

Many users here have had their politics made public by the very nature of their activism. If you run for County Central Committee of your Party your name has been published. If you were a guest speaker on almost any campus, they got your info. Lists don't scare me. Being taken off lists does.

As Jack pointed out, the people on this list are all very young, and I'm not one to support the potential death of minors because they have differing views than me.

Doug Smith is from Soddy-Daisy Tennessee, and attends Carson Newman College. He is NO LONGER EMPLOYED. In addition to calling for a return to slavery and wishing for the entire Obama family to die in a fire, Doug also likes to make “jokes” about domestic violence.
So they've managed to get at least one person fired from their job for saying what amounts to angry ranting on the internet, how long until one of these 15 year old kids get kicked out of school?
This is just sick.

I have to disagree with you here, comrade. I can see your point when it comes to underaged children because they're in their formative years, but a college graduate with a job who is both racist and cracks domestic abuse jokes gets no sympathy from me.

Right, lets name, get beat up, get fired and kicked out of school 15 year old kids. Most of these people are under the age of 18. This is some asshole taking out their anger on a bunch of underaged kids and ruining their lives because his feelings are getting hurt. What's the point? What does this accomplish? It just fucks people over and destroys any semblance of privacy. Most of these people are from the South where this kind of thing is institutional, and they're too young to know life or ideas that are any different. How long until someone gets beaten to death over this? It's stupid and it's going to fuck them over for the rest of their lives because a quick google search will reveal this.

Sure, I'm more concerned about the kids though, this is almost all kids or young adults.

This girl is saying some fucked up shit, of course, she's also 15 and from Mississippi where this is institutional. What's going to happen when she goes to school and this comes out? What is the administration going to do? Expel her? It even says the name of her school and gives her area code and state.
So basically this is going to ruin her life because she's holding stupid beliefs she's been raised with at the age of 15 (http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8955/kaylabrooke3.jpg)
Edit: I forgot how images work on this website since I haven't been here in like a year, so sorry for messing that up.

The thing is, these posts were made publicly. It's not like the site author hacked into these people's computers and dug up their secrets to expose them to the world - you go publicly online, you tacitly agree to the repercussions of what you post. There's a plague of cyberbullying and hate speech online (which has already led to suicide and violence against innocent people by assholes like this and their followers), and I for one am happy to see someone fighting back. My only concern is that they mistakenly expose the wrong person.

Kids do dumb things publicly all the time on the internet because they don't understand the long term consequences, something that this website has created, and they never will. 5 or 6 years ago I was a member of the "Fuck The Troops" group on Myspace that got lots of media attention for a while because I was an edgy 2deep4u teenager. What if someone had cataloged me and my stupid beliefs and released it on the world? I would still be getting screwed over or at least publicly known for something I stupidly believed in at the age of 15.
You actually make a good point about exposing the wrong person. Theoretically (I don't know how tumblr or blogs work, so bare with me), I could make an account for some guy who beat me up in elementary school or a girl who rejected me on Tumblr, go to Stormfront to find articles and post them periodically, and put their personal information on there and get them "exposed". Kids do messed up stuff I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up happening (or they try to "expose" someone named Joe Hill in Indiana and end up "exposing" an unrelated Joe Hill in Texas for his posts).
Really the entire fact that this exists and someone is taking time out of their day to publicly shame teenagers is ridiculous.

The whole idea of this list is apalling. What you think and say as a teen/young adult shouldn't be branded on your forehead for life. I was raised by conservative christian parents in rural West Virginia. When I was was 15 16 I was ignorant and racist. I would draw swastikas all over the place along with pentegrams and writing 666. I was angry and lashing out. I was raised around ignorant racists and picked up there views. But I changed. I woke up and became ashamed of my past views. I learned and grew and turned into a completely different person. Now I know not all these people will change, that those who change are the minority. But they should be given the chance and shouldn't have this shit tied to them publicly. It could just as easily be me on this list. If I had twitter and 15 I'd hate to see what kind of horrible shit I would have tweeted. I have enough guilt and shame as it is I don't need an extra dollop of bullshit on top of it. I just think its really unfair to make a list like that. At the very least the could have an age limit and not go after young people who haven't had the chance to become their own person yet, to shed the baggage they were raised with and form their own opinions. Furthermore, the true racists who will stay racist the rest of their lives will expose themselves sooner or later. I've lost friends over it. Its made the holiday season unbearable because I refuse to associate with racists any longer. There is no telling which people will change and which won't so we should instead focus on better solutions than publicly shaming teenagers for fun.

Good point. One the one hand I don't have sympathy for people saying racist and sexist crap on the internet - it's pretty rampant and has become too acceptable. And when people call others on it it's always suddenly "ironic-racism": "Oh, develop a sense of humor, I'm just being outrageous" or the non-racist is accused of PC-totalitarianism.
The internet has also allowed organized racists a place to promote their ideas and recruit where they aren't confronted and overwhelmed by opposition.
But do "shaming websites" actually accomplish anything valuable? Do they help workers or others confront fascist threats? It is an inherently passive way of dealing with the issue that develops no concrete way to oppose racism/sexism, fascism, or it's social roots.

I agree that it's messed up to do this shit to young kids. kids and teenagers usually haven't learned much about the world and they shouldn't be condemned for having shitty views. They should be corrected and educated. I had despicable views as a kid and look where I'm at now. That being said, I fully support the exposing of grown fascists. They do it to us so we might as well do it to them. If sites like redwatch expose our comrades to violence and harassment, then we have every right to do the same. I don't care what happens to adult fascists, if they get fired for posting racist shit on the internet, so be it. Fuck em.

I agree with you to an extent, but anyone on the far left should probably realize that there's a good chance they'll be arrested or beaten or something. I'm not saying people shouldn't be cautious, I'm just saying that simply being a communist can and has gotten people repressed and even killed.

I can't really speak to the character of the people being exposed here. Many of them are very young. Certainly they are accountable for what they do and say, but they have their entire lives ahead of them. I think it is appropriate for them to be shamed for their hateful, idiotic decisions, but there needs to be a method by which they can be rehabilitated. We all change as we grow, many of us quite starkly. If these individuals should learn their lessons and put this ignorance behind them, what are we doing to help them? What are we doing to help these people out of this stupidity aside from encouraging them to feel an appropriate level of shame?

i think the point of the website is that these kids feel invincible because they think they are posting anonymous on the web while actually leaving a clear trail of social media clues to their real identity. as such this tumbl, that doesn't hack or tap, just follows the breadcrumbs (or maybe one should say whole loafs tossed around) specifically targets these kind of kids that maybe have some hope of coming around when faced with the fact that words can have consequences, to teach them a well deserved lesson..
its a online bigot slap
