Is this tech the beginning of a startrek utopia or is not that big of a deal

My understanding is that materials and fabrication methods are limited, although there are now 3D printers that can print 3D printers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RepRap_Project).

Not sure how good they can get.
