"left wing" and "right wing" politics were non existent when that was written, nor would they for several hundred years, it is refering to "god's" "right hand" where all the "believers" of "god" go it is filled with "sheep" a christian symbol of believers (kinda ironic huh?) the "left hand" refers to the "sinners" and "unbelievers" this place is filled with "goats" and "satan".

The origins of left and right wing politics comes from the French Revolution where the liberals would sit on the left side of the house of parliament and the conservatives on the right.

In Ireland (and maybe other catholic countries), people who wrote with their left hands were considered evil and referred to as "Citeogs" which was meant to be something like "devil" or "evil person". Many children were beaten if they used their left hands to write and were forced to use their right, resulting in many being very bad writers in later years.
