Mikhail Malyukov, an unemployed Russian worker -- reportedly drunk at the time -- came up to the former Soviet president and punched him for betraying the Soviet Union at the time of Gorbachev's visit to Omsk on April 24, 1996.

A Russian source gave the following description at the time:
Mikhail Gorbachev, who is running for election as president of Russia, canceled a public meeting in the Siberian city of Omsk yesterday after being slapped in the face by an unidentified man. The former Soviet president was said to be shaken but not seriously hurt; his assailant was reported to be an unemployed man who had been drinking.

According to the AP,
A court in this Siberian city ordered psychiatric treatment Tuesday for the man who slapped Mikhail Gorbachev in the face during a campaign stop last April.

Mikhail Malyukov, 29, an unemployed Omsk resident, blamed the former Soviet president for launching reforms that cost him his job. According to Omsk police, the attacker had been discharged from the army on grounds he was psychologically unstable.

The man, Mikhail Malyukov, said he "wanted to slap this man in the face for what he did to the country."

According to another account from the Omsk news,
Mikhail Malyukov stood near Gorbachev's expected "route," his back to the doorway. . . Gorbachev entered quickly and while the guards lagged behind, he stepped toward the guest and delivered a strong blow. He then said "This is for betraying the country's interests, for the collapse of the Soviet Union!"

That's the least he deserved. He should have been publicly hanged in Red Square.

I love how clearly this displays how liberalism took root so quickly. The idea of this man being unemployed makes him less than and therefore, discredits his action and/or the meaning behind it.

It wasn't completely his fault. Things started going downhill when revisionists like Khrushchev got into power and started reforming. He definitely had a role in its collapse though.

Nevertheless, interesting story.

He deserved much more than a punch to the face. A bullet would have been better, to be frank.

Gorbachev faced only bad options. Would it have been better if the Soviet Union had been ruled by neo-Stalinists? Yeltsin OTOH ought to have been publicly hanged in Red Square for allowing the "privatization" that resulted in the looting of Russia by the oligarchs.

Putin is worse than Gorbachev and as bad as Yeltsin. Putin has moved against the Yeltsin-era oligarchs, but only in order to favor a different set of oligarchs loyal to him.

What's with this Great Man view of Gorbachev of him single-handedly bringing down the USSR?

Dafaq why is he beating up a kid.

This is how manly men prove their manliness and reinforce their positions as the alpha males. Beating women is another way, but women sometimes fight back while children just take it.

That photo of Putin puttin' the karate moves on that kid reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer joins a karate class with a bunch of kids and bullies them to the point where they gang up on him and give him a beatdown. Like to see that happen to Putin.
