Mikhail Malyukov, an unemployed Russian worker -- reportedly drunk at the time -- came up to the former Soviet president and punched him for betraying the Soviet Union at the time of Gorbachev's visit to Omsk on April 24, 1996.
A Russian source gave the following description at the time:
Mikhail Gorbachev, who is running for election as president of Russia, canceled a public meeting in the Siberian city of Omsk yesterday after being slapped in the face by an unidentified man. The former Soviet president was said to be shaken but not seriously hurt; his assailant was reported to be an unemployed man who had been drinking.

According to another account from the Omsk news,
Mikhail Malyukov stood near Gorbachev's expected "route," his back to the doorway. . . Gorbachev entered quickly and while the guards lagged behind, he stepped toward the guest and delivered a strong blow. He then said "This is for betraying the country's interests, for the collapse of the Soviet Union!"
