I know not everyone here is all that hot about Chavez, but Venezuela in now on the UN Human Rights Council. I was interested in what others think about this.

I thought the UN rights council has a revolving chair that lets pretty much anyone in. I may be wrong, but i thought Libya held a seat just before the revolution.

Technically they're voted in, but yeah it's understood that every nation should have their time at it, in the past we've had many nations in there. Such beacons of human rights like the PRC, Israel, and Saudi Arabia both have been on the predecessor organization United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Nevermind the US.

It's a politicized organization obviously, it depends on where they choose to focus their rage on a particular nation. From what I read the US actually boycotted the organization until 2009 because of differences over the Israeli-Palestine issue and claiming that there were too many "repressive" states on the board (Axis of Evil and the like). As a result up until recently it wasn't even involved in the body.

Yeah, and some of it's fellow council members include shining beacons of human rights like Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Russia, the United States and PRC, among others. I think that tells us all necessary things when it comes to the UN human rights council, Venezuela's addition really has no meaning whatsoever imo.

Well never mind. I thought that this Human Rights Council thing would become a precedent of things to come. :blushing:

I didn't mean anything mean by my post. Just saying what came to mind. I had to clarify with wikipedia so it wasn't like I had a response ready.

Still, there are some things that happens in the UN that gets the US ticked off, they'd probably see Venezuela getting a chair in the first place as a reason why the organization doesn't work.

There are other things too, like the GA voting nearly unanimously to call on the US to lift the sanctions on Cuba. Purely ceremonial and meaningless, but the statement is there at least.
