Managua, November 5 (RHC) -- The ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front won a resounding victory in the municipal elections held on Sunday in Nicaragua, including Managua, the capital, according to preliminary results.
Data released earlier today by election authorities show that the Sandinista Front has taken a lead in the capital, 15 provinces and two autonomous regions in the Caribbean area, with 75.69 percent of valid votes; while the Constitutionalist Liberal Party has only won 16.11 percent of the votes. Other political parties participating in the municipal elections have garnered less than one percent of the votes.
At present, the Sandinista Front rules in 109 municipalities, including 14 of 17 provincial capitals.
Meanwhile, the Constitutionalist Liberal Party has announced it hopes to win half of the mayor’s offices, mainly to the northern and central parts of the country, the scene of a war that was fought in Nicaragua during the 1980s.
The day before, President Daniel Ortega said in Managua that Nicaraguan voters ratified the path toward peace and security in the municipal elections, in order to continue the country’s efforts in fighting poverty.
