As Barack 'Not Much Real Change' Obama gets ready for a second term, I wondered how you think he compares to other 2nd term Presidents. I know, I know, who cares they're all the same blah blah, but they're not all identical and was curious about how he compares to other Presidents that got a second crack at it.

The 2nd termers first come to to mind (in that I can remember they had 2nd terms) would be Nixon, Reagan, Clinton and Eisenhower.

I know this is pretty pointless, but that's why the good lord / dark lord gave us Chit Chat.

Hopefully his's time after his re-election will be something along the lines of LBJ after his (re)election. I guess that's technically LBJ's first term since he was still eligible to run in 1968.

I don't know anything about Ike's 2nd term other than some equivocation on segregation in the form of "It's a shame, but it's up to the states". The other 3 all had scandals that absorbed most of their 2nd term.

Maybe we can speculate as to the nature of Obama's 2nd term scandal.

LBJ, the mass murderer, you mean? I thought you Trots were all supposed to be 'Evil America! Bombing those poor workers and peasants in Vietnam! Especially as some of them were Trots! Support the Deformed Workers States wherever you find them, against evil LBJ capitalists and western imperialism!'

Incidently I was reading a book today where there's a photo of Trotsky and Ho Chi Minh, as well as several others. Ho Chi Minh has a very natty cigarette holder and Trotsky's wearing a white suit. It's pretty awesome.

It's pretty awesome.LOL, sorry. I meant like LBJ after 1964 in that there would be massive radicalization and near paralysis of the ruling class in responce to uprisings on several fronts - a large break in popular illusions in the Democrats as pro-equality and anti-war.

I guess that's the first thing I think of when I think of LBJ and so I should have been clear in what I meant. I mean do even Democrats consider LBJ's term a sucess in any way? They'll talk about Carter before LBJ because that history runs counter to all they myths the Dems promote about themselves.

I knew a guy from a Wobbly/German immigrant/New England liberal background who reckoned Carter was the best president since FDR. He didn't seem to think much of LBJ, and I suspect that was in large part because of Vietnam. I guess we used to talk more about America's relations with the rest of the world than domestic policy as I'm really not that well informed.
