Video revealing the appalling conditions that the migrant workers in Dubai face. This is capitalism in a nutshell. The excess of Dubai is built by these workers who are treated like animals.

Is the reason that Dubai is so tasteless and tacky, like an enormous gaudy and vulgar hamburger restaurant, I wonder, that the elites that therein dwell are in such a hurry to show their bloated relentless wealth in the most flaunting manner? Probably. And there in the shadow of the glass and concrete post-modern monstrosities designed by scum-sucking architectural clowns like Sir Norman Vomit-Foster, vast areas of slums for housing migrant workers whose passports were taken from them; and in the shadow of those hideous hotels that wealthy western visitors so adore, sewage seep out into the gulf to make miserable the lives of some poor fishermen somewhere on an opposite coast.

What's really sick is watching people from the west on mainstream television making excuses for these abuses by talking about how other empires had slaves. As if now it's all of the sudden acceptable.

Is there anyone with more information? I'm curious if there's any illegal/underground trade unions or workers' federations; it's obvious organization is urgently needed, but these workers are so busy working and trying to get a meal in their stomach...
Does anyone know the repercussions of striking?
We all know it only takes a tiny spark to light a big ass fire, so I'm not going to be surprised when somebody does something drastic.

I lived in Dubai when I was younger and yes the way that foreign workers are treated (most of them Indian or Pakistani) is completely horrifying. It wasn't uncommon to read about workers killing themselves, jumping off buildings they were working on, or for "accidents" to occur in projects with substandard safety to make shortcuts for profit. They also frequently lie about how many workers die in those supposed accidents. People talk about Pyongyang being a cover for the rest of North Korea but Dubai takes the cake here by a long shot and the mainstream makes barely a sigh about it.

Of course a lot of this also goes on in other gulf countries aswell, Qatar and KSA, but Lebanon has it bad too. If I had a nickel for every story about Ethiopian maids being killed by their employer in Lebanon I would be poor because no news outlet in the west pays attention to it.

The situation for migrant "Servants" in Dubai is bad too.Especially for young women who go to support thier families in the Phillipines or India.
