Some of Russia's most-radical political groups are out in force this Sunday - from die-hard nationalists to outright fascists. In dozens of cities, tens of thousands have joined marches - chanting against immigration, Israel, Islam and all-things-foreign.

What an incredibly right wing thing to say.

No surprise there. Russia apparently has the largest number of Neonazis in the world, and it's gotten so bad that if you're a visible minority it's practically guaranteed that you'll get assaulted (or murdered) sooner or later.

It's truth. Like the guy above me said, if you're visibly non ethnic Russian, your life is in danger.

I wouldn't say Russia is backwards. Rather, the poverty and social decay that followed the collapse of the USSR created a perfect breeding ground for these kinds of ideas. As we see proven time and time again, poverty is the root of all evil. What's ironic about this happening in Russia, is when you consider what the Nazis did to the country in WW2, and their ultimate plans for the Slavs. It's pretty mind boggling.

I really hope mother Russia doesn't make a turn to the far-right in the future. Like Poimandres said, it has gotten really prominent.

mother Russia
You being ironic here? I mean, evoking Russian nationalist imagery in criticising Russian nationalism kinda seems pretty lulzworthy if you're actually being serious...or is there something I'm missing here...?

There are Russian anti-fascist groups. They've got a tough job, though, as they have to endure scrutiny from the authorities who prosecute them for being violent hooligans, etc. In fact there was a report recently about one such case, from Libcom: http://libcom.org/news/victory-nizhni-novgorod-russia-case-against-anti-fascists-was-returned-investigation-021120
Plus of course they also come under attack from Russian ultra-nationalists, who have murdered Russian anti-fascists in the past.

Just watched the video. Saw a bunch of Celtic cross flags, plus one with the skull symbol of the Waffen-SS. Classy.

The same place journalists, judges, and human rights lawyers are. The military and police sympathize with the neo-fascist boneheads, thus leading to them (boneheads) being allowed to brutally beat or kill antifas, lawyers, journalists, people of color, and judges who are harsh on racists/fascists without punishment.

Russian nationalist imagery
Nobody is actually using the words "mother Russia" here, it's from stupid Hollywood movies.

Well... where are atheist groups in Saudi Arabia? But if seriously, there was a small anti-fascist rally in Moscow later this day, held by members of KRI (Russian section of CWI), RSD and Left Front - namely, Alexandra "Otto" Volkova, Isabel Magkoeva, Igor Yasin and others. They were attacked by a mob of 15-30 nationalists at the subway station shortly thereafter. The police didn't intervene. As a result, 2 activists were hospitalized, some other are injured:

Now, according to Magkoeva's facebook page, she receives death threats via SMS and phone. Don't think it's serious, but she should be cautious anyway.

Revolting.
And yeah, Russian Anti-fa are fucking insane. I've heard stories of turf wars with fascists - guns and everything. You know the nazis there are dangerous when people are arming themselves with riot weaponry to fight them off.

An antifa action in Moscow later that evening:

~50 activists tried to block traffic on Tverskaya street to draw attention to political prisoners (Konstantin Lebedev, Leonid Razvozhaev, Alexandra Dukhanina, Stepan Zimin and others). 6 of them were detained and now face charges of hooliganism.
