View Full Version : Chronic Depression

I seriously think I'm developing, or have been developing, chronic depression due to reading alot about History, politics, and other things like the epidemic of AIDS in Africa. This goes hand in hand with my attitude that can be compared to Maoist Third Worldists craze (although not extreme) about the disgusting ignorance that most Americans have about politics, and the real world as a whole. I mean it feels like I'm surrounded by Ignoramus who choose to be like that, and who think that their issues such as fucking BASEBALL and a giants parade are more important than the state of the world. And I feel powerless to do anything about it. I'm going to intensify my activism in the next year since I'm turning 18, which means that for some reason my parents will get off my ass. I mean turning 18 means you're an adult in America, which makes no sense since I know 50 year olds who act like they're in Kindergarden.
Anyways, what should I do? I smoke weed like a chimney already, which helps me ignore it, but I've been depressed since before I started smoking. Sorry if these kind of threads come up, but I feel more comfortable talking about this with relative strangers who share my basic world outlook. I'm not suicidal or anything, but I'd like to be pro active because I have friends who had the same problem, whom are now messes.

I may be warned for ageism for this, but... being a teenager kinda sucks. It usually (but not always) gets better when you turn 22 or something.

This doesn't sound like depression, just frustration or maybe burnout. If you are concerned you should see a doctor.

You couldn't possibly warn someone for ageism in this case since age would be a huge factor in this. Hormones at this age just play a big part.

Seeing as you are in the company of people who follow the revisionist SF Giants in direct contradiction to the orthodox teachings of the L.A. Dodgers I can see why you feel the way you do.
Having said that the whole self-medicating(Marijuana) thing scares me. It's only a matter of time before that's not enough. Seen a professional lately? I'm thinking not. You are reaping the whirlwind with this thing. Many, and I mean many a good person have gone down this road and died a horrible, lonely death. And for no good reason at all. Talking about it is all well and good, now go out and take your health and future in your own hands.
Edit: Never feel the need to apologize for being your own best advocate.

Happy, well adjusted people don't make good revolutionaries. The only thing you can do is just wait it out. There's no such thing as just deciding to not feel like shit today. You could try medication. I'm on 80mg of prozac but the jury's out on whether or not it helps; if anything it turns down the volume but doesn't turn the stereo off. And as a fellow bay area resident I would like to say fuck the Giants and fuck baseball.

Comrade, I'm a clinical psychologist quite conversant in treatments for depression. I think that it is important to separate pessimism about the current situation of the world, which I would share with you, and the markers for clinical depression. If you want to contact me with a direct message, I would be happy to discuss this further. Depression is a serious problem that should not be ignored. The simplest things that might help, and that are good for you anyway is regular sleep (about 8 hours a night), decent diet (avoid consuming loads of simple sugars), and most important, exercise. These things might help, but they might not be enough if you are suffering through a Major Depressive Episode. Obviously, I have no way of knowing if you are really clinically depressed. I hope that you are not. If you are it is best to seek competent help. Good luck comrade -- I hope you are feeling better soon.
