On December 19th 2003, the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party of Iraq (ASBP) issued a statement after the arrest of ASBP former leader Saddam Hussien.

In it, the deputy leader of the ASBP, Izzat Douri assumes the post of gen-sec. of the ASBP and has been proclaimed as the new 'President of the Republic of Iraq'.

For some reason, I was unable to post this in the news section.

IS the baath party really socialist, or do they just call themselves that?

They just call themselves that Com. Red, they have a few moderately left wing things that I support such as nationalization of industry and free education, but they are capitalist still and have no plans to overthrow capitalism.
