Just saw previews for it for the first time. Supposed to be in theaters on Nov. 16. What do you all think?

I'm a sucker for historical dramas even though I've seen so many of them that either sucked or were historically inaccurate. This is one of my particularly favorite periods in American history though so I wanna see it.

Based on the trailers, I think there are some Oscar nominations in its future.

I've seen a lot of great trailers to horrible films but you seem to know a lot about film so I'll take your word for it.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was pretty bad, I thought. I had high hopes but was let down.

Hopefully this Abraham Lincoln film is better.

I've been known to be wrong. I didn't think Scorsese's The Departed was going to be nominated and win several Oscars.

There's a couple big films all reaching for Oscar glory this year. Les Mis, The Hobbit... tough competition. To be honest Lincoln looks kinda lame to me and will probably annoy me in the same way Iron Lady and King's Speech did.

I'm so going to see this and for the record, I liked when he was hunting vamps, to me, that was the historical drama, this is the historical fiction.

I'm just a sucker for Daniel (May) Day Lewis. I wonder what kind of wacky accent he'll come up with this time! Lol. So honestly, I'll probably end up seeing it at some point just for the actor and (I'd imagine) nice production values :D

But I don't know, it's Spielberg and based on that "Band of Rivals" book right? I love Spielberg for his fantasy and escapeism (I'm one of the few people who really liked War of the Worlds I think) but his "serious" movies always end up seeming a little mehanannensehblahh. His strengths are in a tight and thrilling sequece IMO but when he tries to do drama, he dosn't just draw on classic hollywood cinematic language, but the hokey sentimentality of that era too.

Also politically, in the descriptions I've read of the movie, the plot is described as "Lincon battles to pass the 13th amendment against opponents". Blach. Hmm, well first of all, a movie all about Congress and politicians doesn't sound that appealing irregardless of my political views. Also I hope that despite invarribly being some kind of "great man" story it is at least more nuanced than the trailers and descriptions make it seem. Slaves had already been freeing themselves, Union Generals had been defuying the Exectutive to free slaves even, and the war had polarized things to the extent that the centrality of slavery in the war was inescapable - lincoln may have been a crusader inside his administration (I don't know that side of the history very well) but he was tailing historic events and was a moderate in his party.

There will probably be at least one civil war battlescene in it, though.

Trivia: "Gone With The Wind" is the only civil war movie without a battlescene.

The King's Speech won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. Films like that or Lincoln can play well with Academy voters, at least when they're not going for a dark horse like The Artist.

At this point, I don't see The Hobbit as a competitor except in the technical categories. Les Mis, maybe.
