Cyril Ramaphosa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_Ramaphosa#Businessman), a leading figure in the ANC and the trade union bureaucracy in South Africa, had called for the police to take action against the striking miners at Lonmin the night before the massacre.
He was one of the former leaders of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Since the end of apartheid, he has become very rich off the back of numerous business dealings and corruption. He also has business interests with Lonmin itself.
