assuming you dont want to get into DJing you can buy a brand new technics belt drive turntable pretty cheap almost anywhere, they are all good enough for most records as longs as you treat its needle and your records with some care.

Audiogon (http://app.audiogon.com/listings?page=1&no_listing_types_auctions=false&no_listing_types_classifieds=false&items_per_page=50&order_by=current_price%20ASC&location_filter_radius=25&filter_category_id[]=36&min_condition=1&max_condition=11&listing_types_auctions=1&listing_types_classifieds=1) is a good resource.

There's a pretty decent thread (old as heck tho) on Head-Fi (http://www.head-fi.org/t/228059/low-budget-vinyl-source)with a big ol' list of cheap turntables in the OP.

Technics are terrible. But it's true that all the quality is in getting a decent needle.

Unfortunately OP is not very helpful in the sense that they have not provided things like a general location (for specialist dealers and shops etc), and more crucially, a budget. You can sepnd Ł100 and get a turntable that makes your records sound like shit, or spend more and get something that is actually decent, and with a decent needle.

Also, who orders records before even having a turntable?

Vinyl is already plural! I'd honestly just check out record shops in your area for a cheap one. A good one new is gonna cost you more than 150.

Yeah, to be honest I'd save up for a decent turntable rather than get a poor quality one. A decent turntable will last you, like, your whole life if taken care of so I'd think about it carefully. Also worth considering the speakers and the system you're playing it through as well. It's a lot of money but I would consider (with my shoddy conversion skills) of something in the region of $350 for anything half good.

http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?prod=essential&cat=turntables&lang=en - is very similar to the turntable I have. I think the project fixed band turntables are excellent.

Craigslist. Dual and Gerrard are names to look out for. Ditch the old cartridge and get one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SC35C-DJ-Turntable-Cartridge/dp/B00006I5SC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1351879241&sr=1-1&keywords=shure+sc35c). Stay away from cheap idler-drive turntables, they'll give you lots of hum and buzz when paired with a magnetic cartridge. On a good Dual with a heavy tonearm, the sc35c will even give an ortofon SPU a run for its money. Stay far far far away from the audiophile market unless you want to be bombarded with pseudoscience (http://www.needledoctor.com/Tara-Labs-The-Gold-AC-Power-Cable?sc=2&category=224) and commodity fetishism (http://www.needledoctor.com/Clearaudio-Statement-Turntable?sc=2&category=347).

Technics are terrible. But it's true that all the quality is in getting a decent needle.Technics turntables are great. Their speakers, on the other hand...

edit: Btw, here's a demo (http://dnn.x10.mx/ybb.wav) of the sc35c. Might take a while to download. Hear that hum I was talking about? Keep in mind this was recorded tracking at 5 grams, which is enough weight to damage your records under the wrong conditions. Most turntables track way under 3 grams.

Still sounds way better than it should for the price, though, and a million times better than it should sound for a DJ card. There's a reason the BBC uses those things on their $1k turntables.
