What should be done during the coming socialist revolution? In this series of posts, I postulate a number of ideas, to instigate thoughtful replies and discussion. Please include your comments below.
Revolutionary Action #1 – Business Models:
The corporate business model shall be illegal. Individuals cannot own, in all or in part, businesses in which they do not work. Business cannot own, in all or in part, other businesses.
All enterprises with more than 50 employees to become worker-owned cooperatives (there should be a review process to allow for exceptions in certain areas, if necessary). At a minimum, workers should elect all managerial positions for 1 year terms (revocable at any time by majority vote), decide all compensation rates (rates are to be public knowledge), and democratically determine how to invest or divide any remaining surplus at the end of the year.
Employees of smaller enterprises (fewer than 50 employees) shall become members in worker-run trade or industry unions (if they are not already union members). The employees of any particular firm may also petition to form a worker-cooperative, if it makes sense to do so.
Why?
The essence of socialism is the workers control of production. This is the foundation of any desired socialist state. This action will also help bring wide public support for and defense of the revolution, as the workers (the majority) will no longer be alienated from society.
