View Full Version : How do I prevent my cousin from becoming a cop bastard?

My cousin and her girlfriend are planning to major in criminal "justice" in college. Now, I care about both of them very much, and I don't want to see them grow up to be a class enemy. How do I convince them that the police is an inherently immoral institution?

Maybe play them 2Pac's first album..

But on a serious note, my dad once told me of one of his friend's cousins (I know, right?) who became a cop/policeman. Now, my dad hates the police - being of a travelling and anarchic background he's had some very unjust dealings with them in the past - but he said this guy was one of the genuinely nicest people he has ever met. The story goes that this guy, who was very honest and caring, joined the police with the intention of helping and protecting the vulnerable. Now you can't argue there's anything wrong with that, can you? However, the story goes that within a few months this guy had been dismissed or felt compelled to resign, because the system was filled with liars and power-freaks, as I'm sure we all perceive it to be. I reckon that if your cousin and her girlfriend are decent enough people, they won't need any help in turning away from the police force. :)

Fucking immoral cops, arresting murderers and rapists and stopping speeders so they don't run over children! Hehe. The police is not an "inherently immoral institution", though it may take on that form very often. Doesn't mean it always has to. Anyways I thought criminal justice majors mostly become supervisors of detectives, correctional officers, jailers, etc, etc.

My twin sister wants to be a police officer. I've tried explaining to her why that would bother me and she just says I sound like an Anarchist and dismisses me.
I dunno man, there's probably nothing you can do to be honest.

Live and let live; come time for revolution, remember the words of Dead Prez:

"Would you be ready to take the life of somebody you know, or have feelings for if necessary? I got cousins in the Military, but as far as I'm concerned they died when they registered."

I major in criminal justice. However, I had/have no interest in becoming a police officer, but rather a paralegal. Which I have done in the past. Although honestly I would have loved to have gone to art school, I got accepted and everything, but my parents refused to pay for it. :/

I could never be a cop, I'd let everyone go with a warning for just about any crime they committed. lol

Well, that's a relief. I thought that the police was where most CJ majors went. Maybe I can suggest some less objectionable career paths for her.

Yeah, most go for jobs with the courts and stuff like that. Becoming a regular cop, doesn't require 4 years of college. If anyone here ever has a question on police procedure and whatnot in the US they can ask me and I can help them out. I'll just say the one thing that the lawyer I worked for always told me. "Never admit anything and never try and talk your way out of a situation. Ask if you are under arrest. If so, shut up and remember you don't have to answer any questions. If not, then if they are detaining you without cause for longer than necessary (time it takes to write a ticket, or whatever the reason they stopped you) you are free to leave."
