when i was a sort of crass-loving anarkiddy i volunteered at housmans, a radical bookstore in london. alan also volunteered and i often worked with him at the till. he was a lovely, funny man and gave me loads of old pamphlets which really set me on a different path politically: clr james, pannekoek and gorter, maurice brinton, and so on. my politics have changed again somewhat since, but reading that stuff really opened my eyes and helped me see things differently. i just sorta stopped volunteering one day, didn't give 'em any notice and then got embarrassed about not going back, so i haven't seen alan in about two years. really, really sad seeing this. :(
