+10 if nobody knows 'em, -10 if somebody does. no cheating.

i'm going with the triffids. i picked up their cd for free when i did work experience at a now defunct magazine called 'plan b' (no relation to the awful white singer-rapper); it was in the 'shit-box', a box dedicated to promos nobody wanted to take home :(

the triffids were from australia and mates with nick cave, a few of the ones who survived now play with nick. their sound is strange, kinda too slick and produced if that makes sense -- they shoulda been rawer. a sort of australian americana pop, with some 80s goth thrown in, but the lyrics are often fucking gorgeous.

aZSAqDhL-Wk

No foreign pair of dark sunglasses
will ever shield you from
the light that pierces your eyelids,
the screaming of the gulls
feeding off the bodies of the fish
thrashing up the bay till it was red
turning the sky a cold dark colour
as they circled overhead.

He swam out to the edge of the reef
there were cuts across his skin
saltwater on his eyes and arms,
but he could not feel the sting
there was no one left to hold him back
no one to call out his name
dress him feed him drive him home
say "Little boy it doesn't have to end this way"

He announced their trial separation
and spent the night in a Park Beach Motel bed
a total stranger lying next to him
rain hitting the roof hard over his head
she said "What's the matter now lover boy
has the cat run off with your tongue?
Are you drinking to get maudlin
or drinking to get numb?"

He called out to the seabirds "Take me now,
I'm no longer afraid to die"
but they pretended not to hear him
and just watched him with their hard and bright black eyes
they could pick the eye from any dying thing
that lay within their reach
but they would not touch the solitary figure
lying tossed up on the beach.

So, where were you?

idk. i think there's something strangely beautiful about their music, and it makes me sad they're so forgotten about ('cept down under, i suppose?)

Dopamine
eu06JSZzlqs
Chinese post-black metal.

It is a shame that they broke up after their very good album Dying Away In the Deep Fall. They had a lot of potential.

nice, reminds me of a more post-rock-y wolves in the throne room. used to be massively into black metal and wouldn't mind getting back into it again, just don't know where to jump in...

or, hmmm.. alcest? yeah, def alcest.

A traveller who stayed at my anarchopunk house in the 90s gave me a tape of theirs. Fucking brilliant skronk. Been meaning to digitize the tape. In the mean time there`s a bunch of stuff on YouTube.

125 Rue Montmartre
Teenage German band that only existed for a little under a year and only ever released one 7 inch. Nobody in the band ever made any other music, and it's a shame because their seven inch is as good as any emo record ever made and doesn't really sound like anything else.

Everyone Asked About You
A little twee, but not saccharine, a little emo in that it's twinkly, but not whiny. You would really like this one, Ostriniki.

agreed... and i genuinely think the triffids are exceptional, i mean... i wanted to start a thread on them but i reckoned nobody would pay attention to it, hence this thread.

i think there's something really beautiful lurking below the shit 80s production.

This guy single-handedly invented juke/footwork but for some reason is criminally obscure.

Really fucking good old school techno that has no right to be so unknown. Very indebted to Robert Hood.

This and Assuck are my favorite grindcore bands. This band is famous for once playing an 18 hour version of Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust, 17 in hours in the singer passed out. What a hilarious thing to do.

Sorry, minus 10. I've been a big fan of the Triffids since their album Born Sandy Devotion which is in my all-time top 20 albums. But then I'm, like, really old.

I wonder if you've heard of The Gobetweens, another great Aussie band from the 1980s no one talks about any more?

Hmmm, how about Fester? They're like atmospheric black/death metal, so if you're not into that kind of stuff you probably wont like it. I like them, though.

I've been about local music for a long time, and YouTube allows sharing it, even bands that are long gone, like this one. Here's 8th Route Army:

POuTnbz4zyY

I knew the original lineup of these guys in the States, I guess the frontman Geoff and drummer Germ have got the band kinda bigger with a new lineup after they relocated to the Netherlands, but I still consider them just my homies:

Also, not only do I know the Brat Attack, but I know multiple people who have quit the band 'cos d00d is a sketchbag.

I've seen Alcest. I also said "SUP" to Niege as I was leaving. He looked confused as he drank his beer.
Also, that Dopamine band is blowing my mind!!!
