Sober for ages, not been out for a drink with other humans or had a solitary glass of something for a couple of months at least (had some champagne at my wedding, prior to that had nothing since new years, I think)

This afternoon I'm getting a tattoo to celebrate almost-three-years of not drinking.
I'm actually pretty excited - since quitting I've discovered all sorts of capacities that I was totally unaware of as a problem drinker . . . like remembering names and stuff that I've done.

You just need to find the right gas station

When I was underage one gas station was so cool. I bought so much beer from there they'd let me in the back cooler and load up crates If I was on a beer run for a party. I was 19.

yes. and one of the only in the entire world overall, i'm thinking like couple of muslim countries and india.

e: yeah here's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Drinking_age_map.png) a nice map. of course that leaves entire africa pretty much a mystery, but it's probably fairly similar to rest of the world with countries like sudan and somalia probably banning it

e2: wikipedia shows most african countries, pretty much all 18. cameroon is 21 for purchase, libya bans it.

Rad! I hope it pans out for you - it's been fantastic for me.
Have you read Filling The Void? It's mostly a collection of interviews about getting sober, put together by Cindy Crabb (who writes the brilliant personal/political 'zine Doris) and her sister. I have a lot of friends who've really related to it and found it inspiring.

Also, I now have a smashed bottle and the words "Break Habits" on my shoulder. It's my punkest tattoo (unless stick-and-pokes are by their nature punker than gun tats) and it's about not drinking. Weird?

Speaking of, the only place in town when I was 16 & 17 that would sell me beer was a gas station owned by Koreans. The only reason they sold to me was because I was in there trying to get beer for the first time and I had a Karl Marx shirt on. The owner exclaimed "YOU KNOW KARL MARX!?!?" He was so happy that someone in my farm town knew Marx that he would always sell me beer, and told his daughter and wife to do the same :) Moral of the story, find a Korean owned gas station and wear a Marx shirt, you will always be sold beer.

I think so. The drinking age in Iceland is 20 though.

I have been sober now for almost 4 months. I didn´t really make a conscious decision to stop drinking or anything. I just haven´t felt like drinking lately.

In the UK, although the age is 18, someone under 18 can drink alcohol in a private household with adult supervision (I think there's a minimum age for that), and 16/17 year olds can drink some kinds of alcoholic drinks with meals in restaurants.

From Wikipedia -

Children under 5 must not be given alcohol unless under medical supervision or in an emergency (Children and Young Persons Act 1933, Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937).[77][78]
Between the ages of 5 and 17, it is legally permissible for children to drink alcohol at home or at a friend's house with the permission of a parent or legal guardian.[79]
The minimum age for the purchase of alcohol is 18. People aged 16 or 17 may consume wine, beer or cider on licensed premises when ordered with a meal.[1] In England and Wales, it must be an adult who orders;[80] however, an adult doesn't have to be present to order alcohol with a meal in Scotland. The legal age for the purchase of alcohol from an off-licence (store/supermarket) is 18. (The legal age to buy liqueur chocolates is 16, but this is rarely enforced.)
Under the BBPA's Challenge 21 scheme, customers attempting to buy alcoholic beverages are asked to prove their age if in the retailer's opinion they look under 21 even though the law states they must be a minimum of 18. Many supermarket and off-licence chains display Challenge 21 notices stating that they will not serve persons who look under 21 without ID.
Supermarkets or off-licence chains that are found to have violated the law and have repeatedly sold alcohol to underage persons are then required to adopt the Challenge 25 scheme. Failing to adhere to this will result in revocation of the licence to sell alcohol. (Challenge 25 is standard procedure in Scotland and the main supermarket chains.)
Purchasing alcohol on behalf of a minor is illegal in all of the United Kingdom. This means acting as the young person's agent.[81][82]

Reminds me, was chattin' it up with this one waiter who was like obsessed with the United States and its culture and loved American football and hated football as it's known everywhere else (I was thinking wtf. He even used the term soccer. I was like, I love soccer and hate American football). He said that the drinking age should be raised to 21 in Spain. Very strange character.

I wonder, how many American parents let their children have alcohol, even if only in small amounts?

I remember my parents would let me have a sip or two out of their pint mugs/wine glasses occasionally, and I didn't end up becoming a drunk. In fact while I can enjoy drinking alcohol, I don't drink anywhere near as often as I smoke.

It varies. Most parents will let their kids have a sip of beer/wine here and there, not enough to actually do anything. A lot of parents, by the time their kids are teens, are well aware of the fact their kids are going to drink and usually tell their kids something along the lines of "be safe, call me if you need a ride". Some of my friend's parents actually got them alcohol.

Then there are the occasional overprotective suburban "helicopter" parents who think little Johnny and Janie will never even think about drinking or doing marijuanas or having premarital sex, but I think they're getting less and less common.

In short, the social attitude is generally fairly relaxed even though we have wacky laws.

My sister and her friends like to drink a lot, and my mom buys them drinks on the condition that they don't leave the house and that they all stay the night, to keep them safe.

It's a pretty common practice for underage folks to have controlled amounts of alcohol with their parents, a glass of wine or champagne at dinner for instance.

Wish I wasn't...then I could get involved in some of the endless bickering on other threads and not be self-soncious about what an ass I'm being. Seriously, I used to enjoy being very opinionated and obnoxious about all kinds of subjects but I'm not now..and I put it down to always being sober when online.
