A good question.
On one hand, they are certainly resisting an oppressive regime.
On the other, they are being backed strongly by the US, which has its own imperialist interests in the region.
I think its worth mentioning who the Syrian National Council are. i've seen some sources suggesting they have links to Al Quaeda, and I know for a fact they are controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Democratic revolution, even if backed by subversive imperialist agendas, it is far better than oppression and slaughter. I don't think it warrants being called entirely an imperialist proxy war, though.

The SNC is composed mostly of conservatives and bourgeois liberals. They've been the leading force calling for imperialist intervention in the conflict. And yes, they are connected to the Muslim Brothers.

I've heard too many heart wrenching stories about the Assad regime's atrocities for me to trivialize the entire Syrian resistance as some big monolith western imperialist force...
But the west is definitely supporting the Free Syrian Army.
