Fucking I hate gangnam style. It was kinda cute at first but I'm completely over it now and everyone still thinks its cool. My theory is that Kim Jong-il faked his death, had a facelift and is taking over the world with his gangnam style bullshit.

I watch a lot of professional Starcraft 2, so they would play Gangnam Style a lot over commercial breaks since the game is dominated by Koreans and all. I thought it was kinda catchy at the time when it had just become a hit in Korea. Then somehow it caught on in the West. No clue how.

tbh gangnam style is pretty different from your standard k-pop and the gangnam style craze especially has nothing to do with the kinds of people who generally are into kpop
also kpop is fucking horrible. i used to get arirang on my flat in finland and it showed kpop shit all the time and oh god

Here's the thing with these kinds of fad songs, incase you haven't noticed.
They are easy to dance to, so get played a lot at bars and related venues. They are widely recognized so patrons appreciate knowing what is being played. And over time they have a way of becoming part of the standard repertoire. The world over.
I guess some things like makarena die a painful death, but things soulja boy and the ketchup song live on with occasional remixes. Those that have a life mix clever lyrics, have something about the melodie that is memorable - oftne a Wagnerian leitmotif. Hell I still listen to afroman. Thus, gangman style my guess would fall int he latter camp.

I think it's really weird how similar it sounds to a lot of other kpop songs.
I am the best by 2ne1 being the example that springs to mind.

Apparently the whole purpose of the song and video is to parody the materialistic bourgeois culture within Gangnam, South Korea. So it's ok by me.

Yeah, this one Korean guy I know told me that. I'm not sure of the writer's motives, though.

motives? it's a pretty generic pop song about posh people because posh people are often pretty annoying. not everything has to has some kind of deep meaning, or do you listen to spice girls all day thinking BUT WHAT ARE THEIR MOTIVES

Oh I know that. It's just that a lot of liberals are trying to link it to some sort of "progressive" meaning, when in reality it's just a guy trying to have fun.

I know someone who heard it in a fucking shoe shop. It's all over the TV, all over the world. Though it supposedly was intended to parody the bourgeois culture of Gangnam, it is clear that the bourgeoisie like it more than anyone.
Tasteless fuckers. Moneyed philistines.

I actually heard the star trek parody "Klingon style" alot before I heard the original. I had no idea, that "Klingon style" was a parody of something.

To truly understand and appreciate it you really must first get into the older stuff. Before it was about the money. The hidden nuances and underlying politics border on pure genius. I was into it way back before it was popular.

I liked the fact that it was so very obviously all tongue in cheek, yet all the kiddie haters took it so seriously.
That is reason alone to like it.
