I see people on Revleft getting accused of being a liberal all the time. I thought liberals were just capitalists, and part of the mainstream political process. What makes someone here a liberal? I'd like to make sure I'm not doing anything liberal.

There are several social ideals that oft come hand in hand with liberalism (such as the whole 'reduce all use to realise human nature' and odd, anti-internationalist stances on foreign countries). I believe that this is what comrades refer to when they use the word 'liberal' as an insult.

For a brief explanation: Liberals are people who support free market capitalism, individualism, and private property. The right of liberty and private ownership of property become the supreme basis for law and authority as well as the basis for the social contract of a liberal society. Liberals also tend to believe in universal laws, instead of laws based on the material, social, and political conditions at the time.

I would like to add that liberals are for constitutional governments with representative "democracy." As stated above me they believe in universal law, which, IMHO, is derived from freedom granted by God, and not by the actual people. Many also seems to have a "West is best" mentality when discussing non-western cultures.

More of a damp and flaccid liberal, you'd like the world to be a little better - you just don't want to have to make the effort yourself. So, you once went on a demo and you watch Children in Need and you voted Labour last time round. But don't kid yourself - that shrivelled and underused liberal conscience impresses nobody.

In short, Liberals are generally well-meaning idealists who think we can actually keep capitalism, but make it "nicer."

You have no time for woolly liberals - it's those spineless do-gooders who are always holding up the revolution. You'll never sell out: you know what you know and despise the prevaricating classes almost as much as the ruling one.
I guess I win.

You say free market capitalism, but regulation, bad capitalism, fair trade etc I would call that liberalism, left liberal, whatever. I dunno, it's hard to have a good definition without either going back to the 18th century or over generalising - although there's always Combat Liberalism.

In my interpretation, a liberal in the sense used here is someone who thinks using bourgeois democratic categories and whose final goals seem to be things like "human rights", "true democracy" or a vague notion of "a better world" as opposed to communism.
In other words, a liberal is at best, a "do gooder", a person who "means well" but doesn't really grasp revolutionary theory and practice and at worse, bourgeois political infiltration.
It's also the universal Marxist-Leninist term for someone who argues with them here :).
o well this is ok I guess

And sometimes pose as socialists who goad all of our efforts into such a system.

Liberals are, ultimately, merely bourgeois reformists. They are not revolutionaries. They do not reject the capitalist order; nor do they reject Idealism. They simply believe that capitalism is best preserved with regulations and a few welfare programs.
In fact, in a way, liberals are simply more elegant reactionaries.

Well I hear that, but I don't know why they are.Yeah I'd say it's a pretty sloppy slur if that's how people are using it. However, if people mean "this or that argument" is a liberal argument or someone's reasoning on this or that are upholding liberal assumptions, well that's probably more accurate way to describe it most of the time. It's not a personal defect in the person making the argument, it's the hegemony around these liberal assumptions and their "common sense" appearece.
