View Full Version : Actions We Have Taken

I wanted to make this thread so that comrades who are new to the movement can see that there are things they can do to help the movement. I've noticed that a lot of people, new or not, feel like there's nothing can be done right now to progress the cause but I, and I'm sure many of you disagree. So I thought we could use this thread to share some of the things we've done not only to show that things can be done but to give ideas to those who want to do something but are unsure what to do.

I'll start:

I've marched and helped organize marches between students and union workers. Most of them have been with teachers unions since our governor here in NJ has been trying to really screw over teachers. We're working on one now that's in support of unionization as there's a massive anti-union strike happening across the state at the moment. So we're working on marching in solidarity with different union groups in support of unions.

I've also worked with various political groups on campus, and a handful off-campus, to organize a few anti-capitalist rallies.

There's been rallies I've attended and a couple I helped organize and spread the word about on LGBT rights

I've also found that just being vocal in the classroom when possible about the marxist perspective on things can indeed do wonders. I've had several people come up to me saying what I said in class made them more open to socialism and interested in reading Marx for themselves.

So, please share fellow, comrades.

I admit that in the way of action I have not done much.

I converted people to Socialism and I distributed Communistic papers in school.
Oh yeah I joined a march.

*hangs head in shame.

I've tried talking to people before I graduated High School in May, and I'd been trying my entire Senior Year. However, I live in a small Midwestern town, and everyone is too ignorant or indifferent to care.

i petitioned for obama

EDIT: ugh learning. ok

so, when i was starting out i tried my hand at student organizing and homelessness awareness raising. pretty liberal stuff. got fed up with most of the student movement for a while. joined the PSL then started doing stuff at least 2 to 3 times a week since. for about 2.5 yearsish.

the 2011 student movement (i took part in the CSU work with Students for Quality Education and the occupation of the admin building at Sac State. that was fun. ) was a highpoint for organizing in CA. things have pretty much petered out though. occupy was a high point for a while as well.

SQE is a California Faculty Association funded student org. Usually every CSU campus has a few paid interns by the union and so it can cause some problems when the issue of tactics and rhetoric and all that come into question. At points it demobilizes student organizers because of this. Regardless, SQE is good when these issues dont pop up. Though independent Student Unions are something id like to work more with if i were to get involved with student stuff again. And i havent been a student for quite some time.

Ok the only thing I've done socialist related is give a speech in english class. It was really passionate, and it was awkward because no one was really affected by it and from then on they thought I was weird.

was it about dead russians that are generally irrelevant to contemporary issues?

was it about dead russians that are generally irrelevant to contemporary issues?Nah, that would describe most of my history papers. The speech was about the need for revolution (mistake).

Well it was done in front of an audience that couldn't have given less of a damn about politics or anything, so they must have seen me as like a weird evangelist guy.

I've done virtually nothing, to be honest, besides introducing some of my friends to radical leftism. It's kinda hard to get involved living in a small town and not having a car.

Besides gathering a significantly large Anti-Racist group? Not much.

I'm still having a hard time trying to spread the word: I've realised that many people around here seem to have this weird idea of communism being a left-of-Keynes philosophical movement that gets rid of the private capitalist sector (what they mistake for 'private property') in favour of nationalisation, and that a 'planned economy' is just a market with powerful government regulation.

Still, I guess it's not as bad as the shit comrades have to wade through when dealing with the American populace and their musings about Communism being 'the worst form of fascism' and all that nonsense.

still a bad idea for a thread

Why? Because then everyone will realize that, in most cases, there is a connection between amount of posts on Revleft and lack of actual activity?

As far as what I've done. On a somewhat tangible computer level, I was the webmaster for YPSL when they were actually more than just a page on the SPUSA website. I have also made several independent computer games, with anywhere from a subtle to overt political message. I've been known to get some writing published in places online once or twice, too, and sometimes distribute them in real life.

Off the internet, I did a stint in the ISO and sold the fuck out of some newspapers and served on a branch committee for a bit. For a while after that, I did alot of work in a public housing complex stopping evictions, and managed to keep a couple families in their homes after drawn out campaigns.

I also was a part of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Kx1n039_E&feature=player_embedded)...probably the best day of my life.

A more interesting question would be about what people are currently involved in.

I guess that's a jab at me for no reason in particular.

But no it's a shitty idea to go around telling people -- or posting on a publically viewable forum -- what actions one's attended and what actions people have taken. Especially when we have folks in the PNW getting raided by the joint terrorism task force on suspicion of being involved with a rally on May Day.

a lot of the users on here who have high post counts are also involved so I dunno what kind of jab they were taking at you but they missed and are silly

Especially when we have folks in the PNW getting raided by the joint terrorism task force on suspicion of being involved with a rally on May Day.

found out recently that the grand jury was actually set up in March and threads like this are dangerous but it looks like everyone is more excited at the opportunity to make poop posts

Wasn't a jab at you at all. It was more a jab at Revleft in general. Yeah, there are people with high post counts that are active, but there are also a lot of know-it-alls in their mom's basement.

How about this for a quidline. keep it general and non-specific? i broke that rule when i was updating on the student occupation last year and of course i brought it up again. but just dont mention current works in too great of detail, if at all?

you can share experience that isnt going to incriminate you or implicate you in a crime. Better yet, how about a general discussion on practical experience instead of enumerating past actions?
