Today it is announced that the Eurpean Union has won the Nobel Peace-prize.

I say, how is that even possible?
There is still so much racism and unequality going on, even in western Europe!
It gives me a real weird feeling...

This must be the first time you've followed the Nobel Peace Prize.

Also if you want to see proper racism go to the Middle East, China or Africa. Europe is a fucking cosmopolitan wonderland compared to the rest of the world.

Yep a real cosmopolitan wonderland... filled with neonazi war gangs assaulting immigrants. Sure when you compare it to the Middle East where foreign workers are taken advantage of daily it suddenly becomes a paradise, but don't belittle what minorities in Europe go through.

It's not so much about racism I think as peace. Rather puts me in mind of those cowboy films where the town has a sign with the population painted on it and after the gunfighter comes to town they have to change it. For the EU it would be 'no major wars for ___ years' and someone' painted '67' in.

With an asterisk and some small print saying 'not including terrorism, places we've invaded, and Yugoslavia, that's not our fault'.

Are you sure about that?

The Nobel Peace Prize has been thoroughly discredited. If Obama and the EU can win prizes...

And Agathor: really? I mean, really?

If you really think europe is as bad as those three, lol. Poverty breeds conflict and ethnic tension.

This guy's got it right though.

Don't worry its just an peace of paper, that's saying you won congrats,it has no meaning.
It's like money it's just numbers that people gave it meaning. In real life its useless (like what would you do with 10000 dollars on an island, with no people there?) Same is with that prize, its useless.

There is a story of a Mississippi judge who grew up during Jim Crow, and he laughed at the idea that racism existed, saying that in his experience he had never come into contact with racism. There are real victims in the news, you aren't one of them, but that doesn't mean that they aren't there. Also Europe is a paradise when it comes to workers rights, sexism, heterosexism and so on when compared to most places, it doesn't mean that those aren't rampant to an extent beyond our toleration.

I call bullshit.

Rather than 'calling bullshit' maybe you should do some research and educate yourself. But I warn you: you may have to stray beyond the IMT website.

Han Chinese discriminate savagely against the Uyghurs; (http://www.amnesty.org/en/campaigns/activists/issues/stop-human-rights-violations-against-uighurs-china) Arabs nations treat African immigrants like slaves; (http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-arab-spring-has-washed-the-regions-appalling-racism-out-of-the-news-7718707.html) In parts of Africa people from different tribes refuse to associate with each other and imprison homosexuals.

I know that western self-loathing is at a very advanced stage on Revleft, but the fact is that Europe and America represent the peak of tolerance.

I lol'd at the claim that the streets of Europe are bursting with neo-nazi death squads.

As far as racism goes, Western Europe is the best place in the world is not comparable at all to anywhere else. Take it from an immigrant. I've been here for a decade and the only time I experienced racism was from other immigrants. In comparison, back in my homeland, conscripted Russians were gleefully bombing Chechen schools and hospitals and collecting ears from civilians they butchered(and then selling the corpses to family members for burial - that is, if they haven't killed their families already) just dozen years ago.

Isn't discrimination against the Romani widespread in western Europe, particularly France?

Also at this rate, I am pretty sure the 2013 Noble Peace Prize will go to the Pentagon

It already more or less did when Obama won.

This is quite an interesting article on how the award is chosen
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/norway/9604119/Nobel-Peace-Prize-Who-makes-the-decision.html

and here's a list of the other possible winners
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2107343/Nobel-Peace-Prize-2012-nominees-include-Bill-Gates-Bradley-Manning-Bill-Clinton.html

What's kind of interesting about the clearly political choice is that they obviously think that the E.U. is in such trouble that it needs a publicity boost. This is basically just a public relations act on behalf of the EU last time around the US was in need of the good publicity so it went to Obama.

That's my take on it anyway

I agree to an extent, however the racism is more subtle in European nations nowadays. For example, in Continental Europe ie. not UK, there are not as many jobs, university places or opportunities available to foreign sounding people. And in all of Europe including UK, there is still a sense of segregation. In Western Europe, all Eastern Europeans are expected to be builders, plumbers or manual labourers, black people are normally restricted to security guards and parking officers and Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are either doctors, newsagents or taxi drivers. So in a sense, there is still much to do for the EU.

Erm... "real life" is in an island with no people there?

Am I a Brazilian citizen that once read "Robinson Crusoe", or am I Robinson Crusoe reading about a Brazilian citizen?

Actually I think there's a strong case to be made that the UK is getting more segregated especially over the last 30 years.
