I have to write a paper for my Philosophy class and it requires that I use one Philosophy article to support my argument. My professor has left the topic open to whatever interests us. I would like to somehow incorporate Communism ideology and/or class warfare (distributive justice, maybe?), but I'm not sure of a topic yet. Anyone have any recommendations for topic and articles?

Anyone? I just want some recommendations for a few topics. Philosophy isn't my strong point...

Try PM'ing AugustWest, he knows a lot about philosophy, especially existentialism. Maybe he could help you out if you choose to write about Sartre & his existentialist marxism, or something like that.

I would go with materialism, refuting idealism. determinism vs. free will.

That has absolutely nothing to do with philosophy. Communism is an ideology, not a philosophy. Class Warfare is an objectively existing phenomena, not a product of some sort of philosophical inquiry. Regarding philosophy, check out Althusser.

Materialism, again, is not a philosophy, but an objective sociological law and a mode of thought. But I agree, an offense against free will is actually quite a good idea. You can furtherly continue the argument to be an assault against moralism, etc.

Those are quite big topics to try to tackle or even summarize in one paper.

Materialism vs Idealism could certainly be seen as an ontological or even epistemological question. So while the "materialism" of Marx's Historical Materialism isn't necessarily dealing with these questions directly: materialism has a history in philosophy that predates Marx's conception of course.

So yes materialism is quite important for philosophy.

You could defend the Marxian view on history and say it endures to this day.

True, but for a philosophy class it would need to be related to other topics it seems.
