Does this happen to anyone else, you say or do something that's not sexist, racist, homophobic, etc, but you have to sit there and analyze shit because you think it might be or could be taken that way? For example last night I was pretty high(so I'm already a little paranoid) walking home from the gas station through a neighborhood that's not very safe and walking towards me are a black guy and a white guy just talking to each other. So I grab my knife in my pocket just in case something does happen, put on my don't fuck with me face, and walk by them.

The thing is I was almost exclusively worried about the black guy and I realized that afterwards which got me thinking maybe subconsciously I was having racist thoughts, that I might believe in racist stereotypes. After thinking about it for a while I realized it probably had more to do with the fact that he was closer to me as I walked past, he was built like a tank while the white guy was short and skinny, and the black dude had the deepest fuckin voice imaginable.

That's not the left's fault. You're just fucked.

o well this is ok I guess
11th October 2012, 02:27
Nah he didn't mean he was actually being racist, he was thinking about whether or not what he did was racist because we all hate racism.

It seems like you've already justified it to yourself.

To recap, you were:

1) high,
2) in a dangerous neighborhood,
and 3) this dude was built like a tank

So it looks to me like you feel like you're really not racist after all. :|

Dude was probably going to 711 to get a slushie

You were probably just paranoid from being stoned and alone and along comes some jacked motherfucker. Don't worry about it, you aren't racist.

It could just as easily have been a huge dodgy-looking white guy and you probably would have made the same response.

It's that sort of thing.

Like, in art history class or something? Shit man in any class. They've been doing this shit since high school.

Something doesn't look like a penis but then someone tells you it's a penis and you gotta work to see that penis.

To simplify all this, he's thinking that he's subconsciously a racist. Because we're used to seeing/making ourselves see people as closet racists/sexists/homophobics/whatever.

I think you're all misunderstanding except for ok I guess this is fine. I'm saying being so concerned with fighting racism, sexism, exploitation, etc, do any of you catch yourselves doing something and wondering if it was racist, sexist, etc, when it wasnt and then was just giving an example. As a straight white male I catch myself second guessing shit all the time.

Yeah... you keep telling yourself that.

Jk these seem like good enough reasons to feel intimidated.

Ohhh. Er, well, nah not often, but every once in a while I'll think "Oh fuck did I just come across as a jackass" which includes sexist/racist/arrogant fuckhead/whatever. But only occasionally.

IF I AM STONED, however, I'm paranoid as fuck in social situations and will think these things x 10,000 and over-analyze every social interaction like crazy like I posted in cmoney's thread about negative weed effects.

Wow, I've never had the subliminal penis imagery indoctrination. Must be a cultural thing.

I do do this occasionally, but probably more so when I'm stoned. I get paranoid that if, for example, I notice a couple of guys and just kind of look at them as I'm walking and then I notice that they're holding hands, they'll think I'm staring at them because they're holding hands as opposed to just because I'm absently looking at people.

usually when I'm walking down the street at night in the area I live I'm weary about most people, irrespective of race...

i always thought u were black, my whole world has been shaken

ya i think sub-consciously racist shit too, i think its just cause i dont read anything about race theory(not racial eugenics but race issues black lbieration etc.) or whatever, have u studied anti-racist stuff? or is ur anti-racism shallow (like "racism is bad") like mine?

that might be it

nah there's no reason to get all insecure and critical like that. it's always good to think about how you treat people but don't get insecure over it. my rules are p. much 'be nice' and 'don't be defensive and apologize if you bother someone'.

these are very general and situational rules though.

Haha you thought I was black because I smoke a lot of weed and work minimum wage you racist

But no I've been militantly anti-racist since I was a kid(had to be) before I was ever into politics, let alone leftist politics. But especially after reading books like The Wretched of the Earth I have myself analyzing race relations differently. You know, can such and such be misconstrued as such and such. But a lot of you have reminded me that I was high which makes me realize I'm usually high when I do that, because I over analyze everything while high.

If you subconsciously foster racist impulses than you do, and there isn't much you can do about it if they have been culturally ingrained. You consciously recognize its wrong and that's what's important.

I'm blaming it all on the weed because I walked down the same exact street today high off my ass and saw a old white man that freaked me out. I see him on his porch drinking a beer and all I could think was "holy shit it's only 1 and this guy is already drinking, he must be crazy...crazy enough to have a gun on him...crazy enough to shoot me...oh fuck I'm going to die!"

If you live in an area where street muggings tend to be committed mainly by black people and other non-whites...

I once stayed in a predominantly white part of Hertfordshire where pretty much all the street crime was committed by local white kids, and where non-whites tended to be students from the nearby university. People were on guard when encountering a bunch of white yoof late at night, but not so much when coming across a group of black people.

subconscious preconceptions of race are ingrained in american society. we see it all the time. a guy nearly hits you with his car and you tell your friends about it. if youre not black and the man driving was black, you're more likely to refer to the man as a "black man" instead of just a man.
