WENDIE VERBERNE: "NO WASTED MONEY"
It's crowded in the give-away store, a squated building in Utrecht. Some of the clothingracks and bookshelves are showing big voids. A lot of stuff is already given away, this Wednesday. A woman comes to deliver two bags of clothing. "It's going great", says Wendie Verberne (32), co-initiator for the give-away store. "People get and bring stuff or borrow it for a while. It is great to see that we can help eachother this way." The give-away store is an answer to the escalated consumptionbehaviour. "We live in a world where money is most important", is Wendie's conclusion. "Having money just for the sake of having it. The newest car, kitchen and tv. It imprisons people. Because the idea of 'less' is frightning. It's logical that people need stuff, but why does it always have to be brand-new? There is plenty for everyones needs." Besides her work in the give-away store, Wendie also has a three-day job in a nature-food store. "Since i became a mother, it's important to have an income. In the company we use a needs-income. Everyone gets according to his needs. It works." Eventualy greed ends, supposes Wendie.
"The systems crisis is a clear signal. It's everybody for himself That goes at the expense of humanity, the environment and international solidarity. Because a lot of people lost the confidence in the institutions, they are taking more initiative. They want to take care of business on a smaller scale. The give-away store is such a meeting-point. Even the volunteers flourish here. Everyone is equal. That's not always the case in a regular job."
OMG is it possible in this day and age!?
I think i...might be a little bit in love...:blushing:
