Not sure how widespread or to what extent these stereotypes about smoking habits and preferences are true, but I worked in a liquor store and it seemed true enough to notice as a trend. Really I think it's just marketing though - Newports are cheap and advertised to black audiences while Marlboro Ads have a white cowboy on them. Same reason men don't ususally smoke virginia slims.

I don't know, I've seen plenty of Newport ads and I've never picked up on that. Most Newport ads seem to be either minimalist (ie just a close-up picture of a pack of Newports) or weird and corny, like this one that I saw in some tabloid recently:
