I think most Mexicans are busy watching "Big Brother VIP" or their favorite telenovela, one reason I believe they're not politcally involved. I mean, if I was living in Mexico I probably would not have got involved in politics. What I have noticed during my visits, is that there's a distinct gap between upper class and lower class, and sadly the low teenage class is content indulging themselves in TV soap operas and getting intoxicated, while the educated upper teenage populous are busy crusing in their Lobos or Silverados with ear-popping stereo systems(and attend wealthy private schools), at least in Los Mochis, since its economy mainly relies on agriculture(and in the drug business. Sinaloa, as you may know, is the center of the Mexican drug trade, for its opium and marihuana production.) What I've also noticed is that they(the lower class) are conscious of the fact that they are being screwed over by the government, but have a defeatist outlook. One example is that while I was over there, there were elections being held, and I asked my aunt who she was going to vote for, she responded, "Por el PRI, pues de todas maneras nos van a chingar." And another incident when a friend, who recently had turned 18 said, "Voy a ir a votar, no ahi nada que hacer."
This is an obvious generalization from what I've witnessed, and I have only read about Mexican government superficially, so I'd love to hear other people's insight into Mexican citizens and their struggle against a government that's screwing them over.

Good post mate, it's true. I'm 100% Mexican, I live in Mexico City. People don't believe in the government anymore and they don't give a crap. It's different here than in the other states of the country, but it's similar to what you describe. The last time, 60% of the population didn't vote, which means two things.
1) They don't give a crap anymore.
2) They've realized that they don't need the government to live.
However, Mexico is a very political country. Che is a great hero here, especially for the alumns of the UNAM and Politecnico. We have the Zapatista movement, which most middle class people supports. The lower and high class don't care about it. The lower class cause they don't know enough and the higher class cause it's not convenient for them.
Mexico is living a revolution without using a single bullet. A cultural revolution in which, everyone does what they want and nobody will say a thing. You can mock the government, you can vote for Cantinflas for president. You can say what you want... I have some friends who sell all sort of commie stuff, from t-shirts to books, everything... they are close by my house which is in Coyoacán, the place where most artists and left winged people lives. They are free to sell and spread leftist propaganda and the government doesn't care. We live in a free country... even though we are fucked up. But we've been fucked up for SO many years that the people doesn't believe things will change. This is were the revolution comes in. The people that wants things to change, the leftists. I know we are many. The Zapatistas already have a movement, which every leftist (myself included) is involved, even if it's in a very small way. There problem is, it will make 10 years (January 1st) of the public start of the movement. 10 years that everything changed and everything is the same.
There is no hope for us maybe? Maybe there is. I see the Zapatistas as hope. I see the people tired of the government looking desperately for someone to change things (main reason why the PAN won for the first time after 71 years of the PRI ruling). I see people trying to change things in their own way. I see people taking care of themselves cause you can't trust the police (they are the ones that rob you).
But it stops there.
We have what we need to change all the crap around us. Call it faith, call it hope, call it dreaming of a better Mexico. But there is no motivation. Because after so many years of being ruled by thiefs and killers, nobody thinks they'll ever make a difference. And that has to change, starting from the education. Some schools teach the kids that the Zapatistas are terrorists. This has to stop. We have to educate the kids, we have to educate the people and then Mexico can talk about changing things and making of this country a better place.
Most of Mexico's population is lower class. We are more than the burguesy. Sometimes I think it would be so easy to beat them. We have the power, not them. And yet, they control everything. The government washes their hands off privatizing (sp?) all the government services that they should be taking care of! It's like a chain... there is hope, but the government does nothing, the burguesy owns everything, the Zapatistas are ignored, the people trusts in a new government... and that new government turns out to be as bad or worse than the last one, and the cycle starts all over again.
I hate being pessimistic (sp?) but it's like we are in a black hole and the light is so far, far away. Are we going to be able to reach it? I don't know. So many things have to change. Where would you start? What would you do? Who do you trust? Who is going to take the first step?
It's hard living in this country. I adore my country, there's no doubt about it, but Mexico is like Frida Kahlo, it's body is broken, but it's got the biggest spirit.

Isn't el PAN considered the conservative party in Mexico? As far as I know Vicente Fox hasn't really done much better than past presidents. He said in his campaign that he could resolve the Zapatista conflict in 15 minutes, which was total bullshit on his part. He was also Coca Cola's CEO(or president?). He said he was going to manage government like a business, and he has raised taxes I believe (most of the population in Mexico doesn't even pay taxes. My cousin had a business and he was doing some 'tranzas' in order to not pay taxes. I think Mexico's society basically functions on a 'compadre' or 'comadre' system, where if you know the right people you instantly make them your compadres that way you can have palancas.)
There's also a lot of racism, and some of it has filtered into the language, like the word "indio" is used in a derogatory maner.
Anywho, it is a long struggle, and I hope we can win some more ground sometime soon...
Domino

That's pretty much true. Except not everyone is racist.

Left For Death* Maybey Vicente Fox hasn't make a lot of changes to the country....but it's difficult and a large procces to make a progress after 71 years of a goverment that stoled, cheated, and lies us etc....etc....[PRI] There were presidents that didn't made a damage to the country...like Zedillo.. that he really wasn't a bad president......I hope that once again....PAN is choosed for presidence

Lo voy a decir esto en Ingles, porque esta mas facil por mi;
The PAN are nothing but the US right wing lackes in Mexico!
When in the election prior to Fox's victory, the PRD won , there was a misterious computer failure, leading to Cardenas defeat........... The US and Mexican authorites would never let the center left win in Mexico, as it wouldn't in any Latin American country unless they where ready to submit to US and the millioneres free trade submissions!
No one defends the PRI, as Cardenas agread that 'the most important thing was to beat the PRI', but to praise Fox after he has destroyed any left wing foot holds left in Mexico ,which have been building up- such as the instutions and land claims, and being openely supportive of the suppresive measures on the poor's future, due to NAFTA!- so much for the fight against poverty....
The PRD employed my entire family at a decent wage, compared to Fox's ideal (going back to his Coca Cola past) of employment at minumim wage levels.
When in Mexico I dread to hear the voice of Foxistas such as your self

Alright from what I understood you accused me of saying that the US didnt let the PRI win? But I said that the US has been letting the PRI win for many many years.
The goverment under PRI control was one of the most corrupt ever in the history of mexico. The people of Mexico were begining to see that and so the elections this time went to PAN, in order to avoid a revolution.
