Agence France-Presse is reporting that the Pentagon wants its drones to be more autonomous, so that they can run with little to no assistance from people.
Before they were blind, deaf and dumb, Mark Maybury, chief scientist for the U.S. Air Force, told AFP. Now were beginning to make them to see, hear and sense.

I think that automation can only go so far in this particular case. They'd still need some degree of human support to prevent disasters, either unintentional or deliberate (for instance, if drones tracked targets through cell phone signals, something like that seems especially prone to sabotage.)

Wow really destroying any hope of someone's conscience chiming in at the last second.

Great, more efficient civilian slaughter and constant enforcement of global hegemony through terror from the skies.

Sounds like Black Ops 2 is really dumping a lot of money into its marketing campaign this time.

You know, if this is true, that's just really fucking stupid. Has anyone ever had a computer that didn't fuck up on them from time to time? And this isn't going to be different with more advanced machines. In fact the more complex the machine the higher the chance for failure or error.

I don't think these drones will be running on Windows. Embedded systems (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embedded_system) are a better choice.

I seriously doubt it will be that automated. An accidental attack would be bad. also, how would you prevent it from engaging friendly targets? seems too complicated and not worth it.

What will we do when the machines rise up to overthrow us? We can't as a human race allow this.

We know the CIA uses drones to kill aid workers that are responding to the victims of drone strikes so why not use drones to kill people randomly and blame the programming for war crimes ?

This has to be satire.... it IS satire, right?

Even assuming no fault with the computer and its programming, the Garbage In, Garbage Out principle still applies. In other words the best programming and equipment possible does nothing to address user error.

That is scary if true

About the garbage in and garbage out i read that a drone strike was authorized because a man in pakistan was of similar height and had grey hair like Osama bin Laden and that was enough to kill him by CIA standards.
