Living in Oakland kinda has the same effect on me too. It's really segregation and gentrification though, not the white people themselves though sometimes it's easy to get frustrated. Also it's because of petty-bourgoise yuppies who are disporportionately white in this area: "Why don't these poor blacks just start a dot.com like I did! If they're poor they should raise chickens and nit-things and sell them at farmer's markets."

To live in a depressed area with like an official youth unemployement of 25% for black and latino males but then turn on the TV and hear Berkeley or San Francisco white yuppies complain about how homeless people are "scary" because they hold a cup and ask for change... well it reaally boosts some apolitical resentments in me. Or to do anti-police brutality work and have one out of ever 3 white people ask "well what did they [some black kid or homeless guy shot by police] do?" as if they need to determine if the shot kid's life was worth anything or not and as if any black kid targeted by cops "must have done something" really pisses me off. Or when white people respond to my adress like, "Oh my god, how brave of you to live there".

But it's not really a big deal (as far as white people specifically) and mostly just due to segregartion here and people adopting crappy attitudes that are ubiquitious on the local news. Every community tends to have some seemingly specific annoying tendencies and assumptions about things. Lots of black people also assume if some black kid got shot that he must have been up to no good or it was his fault for having baggy pants or talking back to a cop: "His mother should have told him never look at a cop sideways, that's why he got shot!". Also the cry of "we can't fight racism, we need new leaders like a new Malcolm X" is pretty typical around here.

It was amazing to me how in Oakland there are two different worlds coexisting so close. On may day I had some older white dude in downtown ask me to "not be so violent" and then had some older black lady in west Oakland tell me to "go have fun and fuck those pigs up".

Okay, saying that you lived in Ottawa once upon a time doesn't mean you have a basis of comparison for Calgary; Canada is the size of a small continent, and the culture is nuanced and different from Province to Province (city to city,even).

To answer Black Magic Hustlah, if you reside in Calgary, then you are feeling the full thrust of the Harper government's assault not only on the working class, but ideological assault and promotion of "Canadian Values" in every sphere.

In Calgary (and Alberta in general, especially Southern Alberta,) , there is a really strong and overt initiative to push the most backward agenda on every level. We are home to the super-reactionary "Calgary school" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_School) ), the U of C recently got an Israel studies Program (And a school of Public Policy, inaugurated by Condi Rice), our only daily paper is the reactionary SUN, Charles Adler on talk Radio, probably the most acute Neo-Nazi gang problem in the country, Visits within the last five years from Cheney, Palin, Anne Coulter and the first speaking engagement by George W Bush after his term as President...If your experience with Anglo-Caucasians in Canada is in Calgary, it's fair to say that you have been getting a portrait that is not over-all representative of the whole.

If you were to go a mere 3 hours drive North to Edmonton, to a large extent you'd find a completely different culture. Edmonton is more working class, comprised of the people who actually physically extract the oil from the ground, not to mention public service workers, etc. ; Calgary is largely white collar mother fuckers who work in towers for Oil companies, and the class composition of bourgeoisie per capita is a much higher ratio here than elsewhere.

As with the rest of Canada, the chauvinism that prevails is intricately bound at the hip with the foundations upon which the state itself is built. Knee jerk hostilities against Aboriginal and Francophone peoples (Quebecois, Acadians, etc) are deliberately sown and cultivated in the arena of public opinion, and originate at the top as tool to split the class.

There is a more complex dimension to the contradiction as well, because Calgarians (many Albertans in general, but Calgarians in particular,) , also resent fellow Anglo-Caucasians from Newfoundland, and the rest of the Maritimes (who perform much of the blue collar menial labour in the province). In fact, it has been a long running ploy of the Oil monopolies and their politicians in Alberta to sow bristling contempt for "the East" in general, as well as "socialist" BC.

As far as many Calgarians are concerned, everyone east of Provost and west of Baytree is on welfare, and the entire GDP of Canada comes from Alberta.

Make no mistake though, all of the rhetoric is emanating and trickling down from the top, and towards very specific ends. Blaming WASPs in general, especially among the working class, is a superficial analysis that doesn't get to the root of things.

Actually I've listened to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto while high and it was amazing.People have said that this specific piece can be incredibly moving while on hallucinogens , I haven't listened to it this way yet.

I'd say classical music does't suck, it just takes a bit more patience to listen to, but its worth it.
