Hey homies. It's been a minute, hasn't it? Figured I'd stop by and post a little story.

So I was just driving in this glorious city, enjoying the changing of seasons. If anyone knows me, I'm a big nerd and play Magic: the Gathering (last 11 years; I have a MtG tattoo). I went to a local game shop, picked up some new cards, and decided to just step inside my car to sleeve them up real quick.

First of all, practically every single LGS (local gaming store) is located in the suburbs, or at least "safe" neighborhoods in this city. I was just sleeving up mah' sweet new tech when suddenly a pounding came on my window. Besides my heart dropping, I see a lady yelling "help! help! my little girl has fallen." My first reaction is "oh shit, I should help her. Maybe she needs to be lifted or something." She says "she's just down the street!" and gets in the car... first of all, what the fuck? I had just stepped into my car 15 seconds before and wasn't expecting this. She says "please drive! she's down the street!" It's what, she seems to be legitimately panicking. I carry a legal-weapon near my side anyway, I felt pretty confident if she started reaching inside her purse I could stop the escalation.

As I'm driving down the street, she says "Okay, anyway... I'm gonna be real with you." Annnnndddd I'm about to either get mugged, taken hostage, or something that I wasn't planning on doing on this fine Autumn day.

"She's not actually down the street. She's *so-and-so-address*" (about six miles away)
Okay, whatever. No big deal. I keep cruising.
"Okay, well... she's not actually my child. She's kind of like, my god-child."
Errrrr, well at least you care for her. HEY, KEEP THOSE HANDS OFF THAT PURSE. By the way lady, why do you smell of alcohol??
"If you havent noticed, I've been drinking... Yeaaahhh"

Anyway, as I'm cruising along, the story keeps changing and I keep getting bad feelings about this. She even asks me my name, which I obviously gave a fake. It's funny... I said Carlos. I'm not even Hispanic or look like it!
Anyway, she was acting super sketchy. I figured she either really needed a fix, or she was going to go in there and have some shady looking dude out (we were heading towards a rougher neighborhood), or some bullshit. Her story has been flaky and I knew this wouldnt end well.

Anyway, she keeps pounding on the door wildly. She's still mildly close, so I just keep calm. She keeps yelling "don't drive off!" I give her the thumbs up. She walks to the backyard, but I wait. Finally, some big ass dude walks out... crap. But she walks inside. And me? I peel the fuck out of there.

Goddammit.

You know, I under class society is a terrible thing and has many symptoms and factors to it. It drives people to drink away their sorrow; it makes people feel terrible and want to try drugs. However, you don't fucking rob someone who's in the same class as you. I could tell once she was going to get back to the car, something was going to happen. She seemed like she had this planned out pretty damn well. She was even saying "once I get back I'll give you money."

I work paycheck-to-paycheck. I don't have any money to give to you. Rob your boss or some wealthy man instead?! I struggle under capitalism as much as you. But to try and pull a fast one on your fellow worker? Fuck off! You keep getting shadier as the minutes go by, and the last thing I need you to do is go get a gun in the house to put in your purse.

I hate how capitalism drives people to do some crazy shit. Well, hopefully she got her fix, whatever.

I was mugged at gunpoint about a year ago. They were quick and had their game down well and when they saw that I was calm they got calm too. They took the $2 in my wallet, and my bag that had some communist books in it and that's it. They didn't find my phone or the $60 of weed I had in my pocket either:lol:.

In my neighborhood it's usually undocumented migrant workers who are mugged because they are less likely to be armed, won't go to the cops, and generally carry a lot of money on them because they won't use a bank or get paid in cash. Some drug dealers and prostitutes (probably the major street entrepenuership in my area other than drugs) but there are risks with those targets.

So ironically it's the illegality of these markets - day labor, prostitution, low-level drug dealing that make them victims of potentially violent crimes. I think this is also why rich people are not robbed as much as working class people. First there's just the acess issue - most truly rich barely ever have any real connect with the rest of us - they drive to the parking garages, restaurants with valets, homes and whole communities with gates. They don't have to walk home from the bus stop or subway after a long day of work or walk to the store to pick up something they forgot for dinner. But also there's less heat if you rob poor folks because people don't give a shit. If a fancy resturant is robbed then the media and police get all involved - if you knock over a liquor strore, then the police go to all the trouble of filing a report and the media says, "well what do you expect, living in that area". Rob an apartment and no one cares, rob a mansion and suddenly they're bringing out forensic teams to look for your hair at the scene.

Any way, I'm kind of getting off topic here. I only wanted to say that a quick and efficient and straight-forward mugging is actually not bad compared to people I know who've been hit over the head while walking home and robbed or your story which seems much more scary because of the unknown factor.

So if you're ever going to rob someone - be upfront and quick about it.

Got mugged at knifepoint in Brixton once, thought about out-running the bloke but wasn't worth it, think he took like 30 quid from me. He looked more athletic than me tbh:lol:

Gotta say tho, that scam sounded pretty obvious, no way would I let some randomer in my car.

Thank god, it was just an ordinary mugging, I thought you we're taking a political turn to the right and coming out with one of those stupid "i was mugged by reality" bullshit essays.

I was almost mugged once, but since I was talking on the phone I told the friend I was talking to to get over here pronto. They were three guys who wanted to "borrow" my phone, given the tone of voice he might as well have done the quotation marks thing with his hands (although I suppose that would have taken away a bit from the threatening part) and when I simply said no and kept walking one of his friends said I was "dead". I managed to walk away and keep my cool. Even if they didn't have knifes (that I know of) and my friend was nearby, 3 to 1 are not odds I like. On the other hand I had a co-worker when I was working in telemarketing who robbed people to survive (given the wage there it's completely understandable) and he was a decent guy. He'd beat the shit out of nazis at a party once for no other reasons than them being nazis.

o well this is ok I guess
29th September 2012, 07:02
Shit man I've lived in bad neighbs most of my life but no one has ever tried to mug me. Worst that ever happened was someone getting mugged near me.
Muggers beat the shit out of the guy. All they took was his 2L of coke.
That aside, this is all pretty ridiculous. This couldn't have been planned, if it were it would have probably went less. bad.

I almost got robbed at a fleabag motel in Louisiana once, right on the border with Texas.

I don't know how many people turn to petty crime just to survive. I think a lot of people turn to criminality just because it suits them more than doing what the rest of us have to do, ie work shit jobs. I don't really care if someone turns to crime, I don't really have any respect for "the law" in the abstract, but I don't think it's ever justified to stick a gun or a knife in the face of someone who's just like you, to victimize someone who's also struggling in life. That shit's fucked up.

Straight up this exact thing happened to me as well. I picked up an old lady that had bruises on her face. She asked if I could give her a ride down the block to get rid of her husband that was beating on her, so of course I did. On the way there she asked if I "needed company" to which I politely declined, and then I dropped her off at this sketch house, as soon as she stepped out a group of people just started walking towards my car from all sides. They clearly weren't very good at whatever they were trying to do because no one approached from the front of my car so I was able to just drive away. Was a weird experience.

i almost mugged a guy once.

My friend got this new butterfly knife and he was letting me check it out. We were walking down the street just away from downtown, like 11 at night. pretty dead area. saw a cop so i put the knife in my pocket.

then as we keep walking my friend was like "can i get my knife back" i laughed realizing i forgot it and whip it out doing the fancy open one last time. just because you know. i was going to close it back up but heres the funny thing. as i did that a guy comes around the corner and freaks out. hands up and offering money so long as i didnt cut him. i actually had to apologize and explain the situation. you could tell his heart was racing and i gave him a ciggie and then that was that.

But that is excactly what you do. If you need to survive by that level of crime, then the easist targets are the closes around you. You are not going to go to a house with high tech security. But by the way you said 'makes me want to try drugs' I am guessing your young and have not had many experience with the criminal class.

I haven't been mugged, but I got scammed. On the way back from the pub at like 1am a sketchy looking dude offered a cheap hot PS3s. This was back in 2008. I said cool but want him to come back to the pub to do the deal. But he kept trying to persuade us to come with him to pick it up. I was drunk and up for an adventure and my friend was a bit naive at the time and was like yeah whatever. We had no cash and I said when we pick up the PS3 and he drops us back near our house we will give him the money. At some point we past a petrol station and my room mate stupidly said "we can get cash there" so the guy pulls in. We end up getting the cash out, driving to one bad neighbourhood and the guy said he needs the cash now to get the PS3. So we hand it over, and he goes into a house or around the corner or some shit, says we have to wait in the car or the guy could get scared. Comes back with nothing, says they are stored in another bad part of town. We drive over there, then head back. It was so much bullshit. He then ask me to wait at maccas incase his friend turns up while him and my mate go around to the house we had stopped at previously. The guy then said the same thing to my friend that he had to wait, then he jumped in his car and drove off.

Basically it was a huge fuck around to get $150 off us. I learnt at the end of the day that if are you doing something dodgy or something out of the ordinary (like picking up a distress women) and there it begins to turn into a huge fuck around from the orginal story, your either being scammed or about to be robbed. It could have turned out worse, we did find knives in this guys car. Though it is a pretty common scam, you go around to the late night pubs and clubs, and offer people cheap electronics, then lead them to a bad neighbour preferrably with high rise government house, and then leave them there when you get the chance.

We live in a society where every possible thing than can be done to derail the solidarity of those at the bottom is done. Workers robbing workers simply mirrors the larger social reality of owners robbing workers.

Never been mugged thankfully, I think the odds of me being mugged are pretty low, I'm usually pretty aware of my surroundings, I carry myself like I'm on a mission (even if I'm not), and plus, I kind of look like a criminal.

Though I'm sure it could've been a robbery attempt, given how botched it was, part of me thinks that woman may have just been scamming you for a car ride.

I was robbed when I was 14 by two kids. Had $20 on me. One of the kids lifted up his shirt showing the handle of a gun. For all I know it could've been fake, but it wasn't worth it.

I also got robbed once after I passed out on the subway. Woke up and had my pocket sliced open. Whoever did that really made bank, what with the $2 cash, fake i.d., and already cancelled debit card I had on me....

Both of those times were when I was younger and considerably more naive. That's not to say it wouldn't happen now, but it's far less likely.

Never been mugged. I know a guy who was mugged at knifepoint but he didn't carry anything on him though except for a 3-days old moldy tomato (he was pretty poor and kind of a crust) after which the muggers changed their minds and fist-bumped him for being an eccentric fucker or whatever.

I dunno, as a young punk we would always beg for change on the boardwalk when the bars let out, mad college kids were always quick to give up money when we told em we were trying to buy 40s/weed.

i think every male friend i have has been mugged but i haven't, and i'm a scrawny shit so i dunno why i've not be targeted (watch how i get mugged tomorrow). used to be a really common occurrence lads coming home from school and getting their phones nicked.

one time i was semi-mugged but they stopped when they realised i had like a couple of pence on me. they were weirdly amiable about it all.

People are easier targets - uncoordinated, less aware of their surroundings, eaiser to overpower, and if really drunk might even just give you the money and forget what happened. My co-worker was hit over the head after leaving a bar, so that's why I was glad that I was robbed by people with a good ambush technique that required no real force.

I got mugged once. It was a dozen or so little teenage shits, some of them on bikes, who chased me for a while (during which they intimidated me into handing over my cigarettes). Managed to shake them off after ducking into a car park of this club of some kind, with loads of people going in and a couple of bouncers on the door. Once they'd pissed off I made my distraught way home. Thankfully I only lost a pack of cigarettes and not the £40 or so in cash I was carrying at the time.

One of the few times when I felt like I would genuinely enjoy shooting some fuckers to death. Fuck those predatory scum.

I've been in situations more desperate than those kids could possibly have been in, where I've had no money and no roof over my head, but it never even crossed my mind to start preying on those around me, as opposed to robbing from Tesco's or something. If you think intimidating poor people into handing over whatever pittances they have on them is a good way of getting a leg-up, then you are as bad as the austerity pushers and poverty pimps that call themselves our leaders, only on a smaller scale. Such behaviour exposes the same kind of mentality that sees no problem in stepping on others to improve one's own situation.

No sympathy for muggers from me!
