Kasparov is commonly seen as a political opportunist in Russia. By himself, he is completely insignificant. The Western media makes a great big deal out of him, but his actual support in Russia is close to zero.

The very word "liberal" is practically a political slur in modern Russia, since it's so strongly associated with the poverty and neoliberal pro-Western dictatorship in the Yeltsin period.

The liberals are regarded as a destructive pro-Western fifth column ever since the 1990s and have been having a huge PR problem, while the radical nationalists do not. Makes sense that an opportunist like Kasparov would capitalize on xenophobic sentiment.
