I'd like to know what you guys think of the United-Nations. I had a question asked in class by my professor stating: "The United Nations has accomplished success in the last 20 years".

What do you guys think?

My general opinion? Rather poor as they are a tool for international capital.

Thinking within the current manipulative system that we live in?
Pretty useful because it acts like a global glue. Or a front for peace.

Thinking outside the current system (read: box)?
Damn useless as it hasn't really tackled the source of conflict despite it's purpose being to stop countries declaring war on each other. That's like saying to stop chicken pox you need to scratch everything off and pretend that it's been dealt with.

It's pretty much a new league of nations in that it fails at it's only job which is to stop conflict.

The U.N. "peace keepers," was the official army in the U.S. led invasion of North Korea. It's like the capitalist Comintern. It calls for cooperation between imperialist powers so they all benefit. Stalinist U.S.S.R. joined it, as did Maoist china, however that doesn't mean at all that it is a global "peace chamber," or what have you. The most recent "peace keeping," missions in Somalia, Afghanistan, and many other third world countries are simply cover ups for imperialism, and it if anything perpetuates the idea of the White man's burden, to keep the uncivilized blacks or browns from killing eachother.

I think they do a fine job looking after the interests of International Capitalism and a poor job of looking after the needs and interests of the working masses. They were totally ineffective at preventing a unilateral war in Iraq and in that regard they have failed in their original mission. Look into the oil for food scandal too for starters.

i think this is the point though; from the perspective of capital the un works pretty nicely. as communists? well, of course not -- we'd be silly to expect otherwise.

doesn't even make sense

U.N. loving liberals can be some of the worst war hawks with their 'humanitarian intervention' craziness. As if the countries they want to "save" don't have enough problems already.

Bang up job they did in Kosovo. And while we are at it, Haiti, Darfur, Liberia, Somalia, South Sudan.......
All shit holes before they went in. All for the worse or soon to be worse now that they are there.

I don't think the U.N. itself is greedy, capitalist, imperialist, etc. However, I do think that some of the countries in it try to use it for that purpose. The fight against hunger, poverty, etc. is genuine, buy limited and under-supported in my opinion.

It's a nice enough way to spend a couple of hours in NYC.
