View Full Version : Huge anti-austerity Demonstration in Portugal

The media are calling it "what may be the biggest manifestation in the history of the country".

It was a demonstration organised by the people through the internet, it was called "que se lixe a Troika", which means something like "fuck Troika".

Everywhere in the coutry people came out of their houses and protested the austerity measures laid out by the Troika.

Even as I write this there are people standing in front of our parlaiment (assembleia da républica), in Lisboa, throwing rocks, tomatos, and bottles at the police that guard the entrance.
They managed to knock out the police blockade and push them back, but they have still not managed to enter parlaiment. They shout "that house is ours!" (they are refering to parlaiment) at the police.

The prime minister says "I will not listen to street protests".
The other parties say "The austerity measures should be renegociated".

This was not a manisfestation of only workers, even businessmen came into the street.
This was a manifestation organised by the people, and it is bigger than any manifestation organised by any syndicate.

The portuguese people have shown their strength today.

Seems more hectic than the usual Portugese protests. Which usually are pretty uneventful, even if they're large.

People (probably anarchists) are always trying to provoke the police that guard the assembly of the republic, and trying to get in.
It has been like that in every manifestation.

Is it true that even organizations of the military and police unions are supporting this. Can't remember where I read that this morning, maybe IMT...

You could look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Portuguese_legislative_election

"Green-Communist" parties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Unity_Coalition) (largest party is Marxist-Leninist, small party is Green) polled at 13% in the last polls (7.9% in last elections). The far-left Left Bloc polled at 11% (5.2% in last elections). Then there is a Maoist coalition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_the_Portuguese_Workers_/_Reorganizative_Movement_of_the_Party_of_the_Prole tariat) that received 1% of the votes in last elections. This makes the far-left parties larger than the currently ruling centre-right Social Democratic Party--in the polls at least.

That's crazy, the rhetorical rightist neo-liberals have only 7%! All other parties are left wing rhetoric parties, i assume, besides the Social-Democrats. If any country is to look at, then it seems like Portugal. This is very interesting.

The Social-Democrats, notwithstanding their name, are actually more like the Christian Democratic Party and the Free Democratic Party in Germany. Disappointing to find out indeed.

Yup. The actual social-democratic party in Portugal is the Socialist Party; the "Social-Democrats" are indeed inheritors of reconstructed Salazarists.
