Increasingly, the post-50-year olds of Germany are being pushed to minijobs and bureucratic-statistical-flatter jobs for their subsistence. Peter is 58 years old, has not found any job and in order not to be deemed "unemployed", the Arbeitsamt (state employment agency) has him and fellow unemployed workers play the Uno card game, taking walks along the river, and taking swimming, physical fitness lessons to keep getting a subsistence wage and hence not be deemed "unemployed" by the official statistics.
Mechild Acherman went to university for six years and ever since she turned 50, has been having problems finding work as a delivery and sales woman for pharmaceutical companies. She has to live off her pension at times when she is not hired (mostly due to here "old age"), her "reserves" as she calls in such times. "It is simply so unjust, in the system. These are things that i cannot influence; it is somehow in the mainstream now and current that old people are not being employed with wage and bread." Currently she is having to work cleaning out shit at a horse stall to make enough to survive on, but because she is categorised as "self employed" she does not appear in the official unemployment statistic. Over 1 million older germans are not counted as unemployed for various reasons.
VW employed a 50 year old man who was hailed as a CDU government labor policy "wonder" by the press. But the "employment" in Volkswagen was one which entailed managing the "Arbeitssuche" physical fitness and job search lessons for the unofficial "unemployed". That man was recently fired from his job and is now using up his pension to survive on, which will later condemn him to using up "social" programs like HartzIV when he is in his pension age.
Klaus, 60 years old, finally got a job he saw advertised in the newspaper as a forklift driver. When he arrived he now gets to stand 8 hours a day sorting trash; the paper and carton sorting line is a lot more acceptable to him than the plastics and hard materials one. Meanwhile, Peter has changed from the balancing planks and fitness balls and is now taking choir lessons. Who knows, maybe he has a "wonder" career as a singer ahead of him; at least, the local agency for labor would say it is a large step up to induce a more creative spirit in the search for jobs.
