So, at the end of this week, I'm gonna be an immigrant to the United Kingdom! my best wishes to all the fine people working for the daily mail, don't write too much bad stuff about me ok

so I'm flying in Edinburgh on 13th because flight discounts are weird and I'll have to dick around for a few days there before I can head up north and settle to my dorm, which I can't do before 15th. So, I'm hoping there would be at least some Scottish or other UK posters who know things about Edinburgh and could recommend something interesting from there to spend my mini vacation there, really anything from history shit to chillest bars in town. i hear it's a great city and kinda shame i have so little time there now

I love Edinburgh. The coolest bar is Bannerman's on Cowgate (google it for a map and pics), and don't let anyone tell you it isn't.

Actually, it might not be the coolest exactly, but it's my favourite wateringhole while I'm in town. It's only 10 mins from the railway station, but if you're flying in, there's a bus into town from the industrial estate next to the airport that takes about 30 minutes. Where are you staying? Have you worked that out yet?

The Castle Arms I like too. It's nearer to the Castle (kinda obvious, huh?) on Johnston Terrace.

Everything in Edinburgh is old (plenty of 'history shit') from the Old Town (which is partly medieval) to the New Town (which is 'only' 200 years old). The castle is interesting but it's also expensive to get into. There are shed loads of museums and general attractions, it's a very touristy town especially in August (but you will have missed all that as the Festival is over).

Calton Hill is worth walking up and looking around at the crazy architecture. Most of the city has great architecture in fact. Try wandering round by Victoria Street, it's great. You can visit The Old Town Bookshop while you're there if you like that sort of thing (I'm a sucker for second-hand bookshops). Plenty of nice places to eat too.

The National Museum of Scotland (also googleable obviously, and only 3 minute walk from Bannermans) is a fantastic place, especially I think the Prehistoric Galleries downstairs, but I'm biased as I'm an archaeologist.

Right, I'll stop and let others make recommendations...

My hostel is actually right in Cowgate too, so I really shouldn't have a hard time finding this place, heh.

Thanks for all this, great stuff! I probably won't check out the castle, I feel like it would pretty much require most of my day and I'd rather see as much of the city as I can, even if the castle was interesting. But the rest seems like I could check it out and I share your vice of loving second-hand bookshops, btw, so appreciated.

Honestly, if you like second-hand bookshops, drinking, eating, historical stuff, museums, architecture... there's almost no-where in Edinburgh that you could go that you wouldn't find something interesting! Man, you could spend 2 days just wandering round Cowgate and Canongate.

If you've got a nice day and a couple of hours, seeing the city from Arthur's seat is pretty cool. Of course, you're only about 2 miles from the sea there too. There's the Princes Street Gardens if you're in the city and want somewhere pleasant to sit but haven't got time to get up Arthur's Seat. Or the Meadows, which is a bit further from Cowgate but not much. Then Hollyrood is also interesting...

You'll be fine. You'll only scratch at a tiny bit of the surface in two days I reckon. Enjoy!

I'm really envious now, I want to go to Edinburgh too.

Have a pint for me in Bannerman's anyway!
