View Full Version : (Encyclopedia Dramatica) Is this how Capitalists see the world?

Well I mean for those who have been to Encyclopedia Dramatica I wonder that the wiki is a perfect example how capitalists (the ones who own and control the means of production) see the world given how racist/sexist/ablest/etc the site really is?

It's how the worst people on 4chan see the world.

It's how the worst people on 4chan see the world.
Infact the worst people on 4Chan might have adapted the world view of the capitalists or might be even capitalists themselves (well I'm not sure if capitalists hang around 4Chan but it's defiantly a breeding ground for White Male Supremacists similar to Stormfront which shows how Right Wing is more popular than the Left Wing which is a disturbing development). You never know how nasty the bourgeoisie really is. That's the point.

Encyclopedia Dramatica is a terrible website created, managed, and edited by terrible people. I don't know if it is how white male capitalists see the world but I think it might have been created by a female and I am sure there are probably some non-whites, autistics, and/or proletarians who have some affiliation with it. Of course, this hardly an excuse for their terrible racism, sexism, ableism, and anti-communism. In short, it just reinforces so many different forms of oppression. I know this doesn't answer you question really. I just had to get this off my chest. Also, I know I might be overreacting. I just really hate Encyclopedia Dramatica and I'm glad to see that many people on this website have little sympathy with them as well.

I'm on the same boat as you. The site has been bothering me for long time and words need to be said about it.
I thought the site is actually a collection (or cesspools) of the capitalist worldview according to them to justify their misanthropy and exploitation/oppression below them. Or rather sexism/racism/classism/ableism/etc are all divide & conquer tactics to shift workers away from the real problem which is the very system itself, Capitalism.

Most of what's written on E.D. is designed specifically to outrage.
I'm reminded of this Oprah knockoff in which the host invited a family of Christian neo-Nazis onto the show. When I say it was a family of neo-Nazis, I mean that the parents were actively training their kids to survive a race war. On the show, one of the guests asked the father what he'd do if his daughter brought home a young black man. His response, said with a grin on his face: "I'd cut off his dick and feed it to him." What happened next is something I will never forget for the rest of my life: he got this mischievous, self-satisfied look on his face that said, "Oh, did I just offend all the little babies?" Compare that to how the Westboro Baptist Church folks act: while on the one hand they're actually raising children to be persistently obnoxious bigots with no consequences for their actions, on the other, they take every accusation of child abuse and heresy and utter wrongness as absolute proof of their being correct. For neo-Nazis and the Westboro Phelps family, the end goal is to perpetuate their attitudes through behaviors so obnoxious as to force one to acknowledge them but not so obnoxious as to be wiped out through criminalization. The virus perpetuates itself through sheer volume. (In fact, creationists work rather the same way.) It isn't about changing people's minds; it about getting people to pay attention to these ideas that would have otherwise died out for lack of staying power.
Encyclopaedia Dramatica is basically the purest essence of this obnoxiousness. On the one hand, we can't sit by and ignore that oppressive, reactionary attitudes are being perpetuated. On the other, we're playing an active role in their perpetuation by calling attention to these particular iterations. We can't ignore how oppression continues to exist or that it continues to exist, because, for the most part, reactionary attitudes actively hurt people. It would be a mistake, though, to assume that every single iteration of this stupidity is inherently worth our attention. Otherwise, not one of us would ever escape the comments section of YouTube.

The "founder" of the site is a woman in response to Illych's comments, but she later shut down the site and relaunched it as ohinternet.com . She didn't shut it down because of the content though, rather she felt it turned into a place where people were carrying out their feuds and vendettas against users in other communities by making pages about them.
When she shut down the original ED, some of the users relaunched it at a different domain, and we could say the worst of the ED community were the ones that followed along into the "reborn" site.
I don't think it's fair to say that ED is through and through an indication of how capitalists see the world. Really most of the stuff on there is just for shock value, and I'm sure some one on their site will add this thread to their page on revleft once they see this- "internet is srsbusnes" etc. As far as 4channers go they're a mixed bag politically, like any other internet community. What is more relevant though is probably looking at their background- it's fair to say, that like with most internet communities, that their users are probably not "working poor" but very well possibly "middle class" if not "upper middle-class" as an American would see it. I can say that even without ED, we've all been through school and seen the subtle homophobia, racism, ableism, what ever considered to be funny. I don't think it's changed so much since I was in Middle School 10 years ago, I still see people throwing around "fag" and "gay" as stand ins for "stupid".
I guess going off the last point I guess we should see why this kind of stuff is funny in the first place, the whole troll mentality. Is it just seeing people get so worked up over a few words? The ability to do such action with out fear of repercussions or damage to personal reputation?
4chan and much of the other offshoots are this way now. Not so much on humor but shock value now.
However if someone is forming their opinion on the world on what they read on ED, you need to reevaluate themselves. Most of what they write in there is for their own niche audience- I highly doubt the average user would form their opinions based on ED. The real sites that we should be concerned about are those that many people consult- say wikipedia! Especially now with its dwindling userbase and editors, it's possible for a small group of editors to inject their own biases in a site that (from my experience at least) most people go to to look up something and form their opinions. Never mind the creepy fash shit like metapedia...
If you want to see how real "capitalists" see the world, check out their rags like Wall Street Journal and the like.

MODERATOR ACTION:
this matters so much!
Because it is.
Good thread.
fug, Hexen, and Rusty Shackleford - this is called.... the LEARNING forum. If you make a post and it doesn't contribute to somebody's political education in a substantial way, it means you shouldn't be posting in here. If I see any of you three making worthless trash posts like this again you're all getting infracted.
This post constitutes a warning to fug, Hexen, and Rusty Shackleford.

Rusty Shackleford:
If you have some comments to make about the mod action, that's ok, but please don't make them in this thread. It constitutes off-topic posting and it isn't allowed.
As far as your actual comments go, well, that's ok, but please doublecheck next time just in case.. and again, if you need to comment on it send me a private message. This isn't the place.
I'm not going to take any further action given the co-operative & civil nature of your post. If you have any more questions or issues, feel free to send me or another mod a PM.

i dont think anyone should take E.D. seriously. Like someone mentioned here, its more a website for inflammatory / "shock" content a.k.a. "trolling" - meaning to say, its meant to be as politically incorrect as possible. i believe most people take it with a pinch of salt and find hilarity behind all the absurdity that is E.D.
just dont take it seriously. :D

I'd wager ED is how a sizable percentage of our membership found Revleft.
But yeah, I agree that it's nothing more than a joke site.

I would like to adress some points .
Q:Is E.D Capitalist
A:Well they do have merch ,and stuff, but does it embody capitalist values? No not really , because the topics are often so off the wall that anyone of a "adult" mentality would be offended by its content, and would more than likely just distance themselves from the site all together (we are to immature for Storm front also they dont like their page on the wiki). Also you would get fired by most corporations for being on the site with work computers its NSFW.
Q: Is the bigotry expressed real?
A:In most cases the bigotry is just part of a offensive inside joke(trolling). There may be people who actually believe in the inferiority of other groups , but it doesnt account for everyone. Most of the regular posters on E.D's forums embody in some way something E.D makes fun of. I am one of a handfull of minorities that post regularly(Bi ,furry, Libertarian, occultist all of which have funny articles), but we also have Jews , blacks , Hispanic , Most countries are represented by our userbase, all sorts of sexualities , fetishes ,and genders.
Q:What social classes are represented in E.D?
A: I have yet to see anyone above lower middle class. Most of our user base is either autistic and cant work, working shit jobs like walmart(I use to) , getting paid shit in the military (but they cant complain because they get their food , training ,and housing complements of the tax payer), or in my case have a really well paying seasonal job....that dies after the fall season (got to love the instability of land scaping ).
