View Full Version : Never buying new as anarchist action

I have been thinking that I should never purchase anything new, other than food, underwear and maybe shoes.

Clothes are cheaper, used tools make more sense, and all branding is slavery anyway....

Well do what you like in your own life - I like thrift stores because I'm cheap :D

However, I don't think this is a viable strategy in a larger sense. If not buying new things hurt the system, you think they'd do something more to help the homeless and jobless.

This is not a viable strategy for overthrowing Capitalism and is about as useful as refusing to use plastic bags in order to save the planet. However, it is a good method to save money etc. although saving money isn't exactly "action".

Second hand shops are for hipsters and the like, Chinese clothes are cheaper and have never been worn by some drug addicts and nasty people.

You know what would be better than buying used things? Joining and becoming an active member of a revolutionary union or group would be better.

That's just my opinion though.

I feel sorry for my wife who does the cleaning when I come back from hunting/ drinking out with the mates, don't even want to imagine wearing used pants someone may have shat/pissed/ etc in... yuck

Why? That's just how I think. I've never met anyone who buys second hand stuff, only some "alternatives" do that.

Its not the assault on lifestyle choice that I find amusing. I like your whole "here, *****, clean my clothes and make my dinner" schtick though, its sure to ruffle some feathers.

I give you an A for effort, but its gonna fall kinda flat I think.

Are you drunk? I never called anyone a *****, especially not my wife.
In our home she does the washing-up, I do other stuff. That's just how things are in my country and that's how they always were. My dad and granddad were communists and that's how it used to be in their homes too.
It's not my problem that you see things that aren't there.

I mean, my girlfriend does my laundry too, but I don't make comments like:

I feel sorry for my wife who does the cleaning when I come back from hunting/ drinking out with the mates

Cause 1) if you felt "sorry" you would clean that shit yourself, 2) your feeling sorry clearly implies that it is her duty to do that and you pity her for her role in life.

"thats how things are and always were" lol, fucking l-o-l.

2) It's not her duty but she cares for clothes more than I do, so she can't stand dirty stuff laying around.
3) It's a figure of speech, maybe it doesn't translate well...

"thats how things are and always were" lol, fucking l-o-l. But that's true.

Almost all of my books and DVDs are used. I do this because I'm cheap (or "frugal"), but I used to make the "Oh, I'm fighting the Man by not buying new" justification. Then I realized frugality is a virtue, and now I own my tendency to not waste money on just stuff.

...you are trading in supporting one bourgeoisie (large corporate) for another (small local).Ultimately nothing changes.

Even more, the petit bourgeois has a more reactionary role than big Capital.

I was looking at a suit in town the other day which looked like the one Michael Corleone alias Al Pacino wears in the "Baptism by Fire" scene. So i went inside, getting stupid looks already for wearing working class clothes, and i went up to the puppet and saw a price tag hanging off the neck and it said "700€" and i said "Ha! For that suit?!" to the lady trying to haggle it down. She then said i was wrong and showed me the price tag on the jacket arm reading "3500€" I felt like such a clown...

Started buying books and clothes for the baby from charity shops, he's too young to worry about it and I need to save some pennies.
Not sure about it being a viable / effective poltical action, feels similiar to the Nestle and Cola boycotts that haven't really made a dent and aren't likely to, at least with the current number of participants.

What?
What is the justification for this claim?

Not gonna do anything, unless perhaps you donate the money you save to your favorite lets-pretend-to-be-revolutionaries group.

Lifestylist wacktivism? I could write a long drawn out explination but I think that speaks for itself. I would at least try not to buy from capitalist pigs that kill their workers but even that can become quite complicated.
