View Full Version : Fixing broken dog-tag chain?

So I recently started wearing a dog-tag, but when I first put it on I had a tendency to fiddle with it by tugging at it. So inevitably the chain broke, and thus after forcing myself not to fiddle with it any more in that manner, I had to fashion a makeshift repair job with a short length of black string.

But does anyone have any suggestions as to something stronger and/or more permanent? The string-based repair has either snapped or unravelled at least twice now, and it's always a bastard fiddly job to restore it.

Also, tips as to how to keep the chain itself nice and shiny would be nice, as I think it's starting to develop a patina.

What kind of chain are we talking about here? If it's one of those chains made of metal balls that you snap into a holder thing, than that's super easy to fix. Maybe upload a picture of the chain.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the cleaning.

Go to a big hardware store they have stainless steel versions on length (with smaller balls though), dirt cheap and a lot more durable than the nickel plated fancy ones..

Easy to fix unless one of the inner 'barbells' broke, which I assume is what happened.

As far as I can see what's happened is that one of the little rods that connects the balls/beads has been pulled out at one end.

If I get a new chain, that will probably take a while.

One of my barbells did break, but I need to keep the same chain. Did anyone ever figure out how to fix this?
