Nominations for best horror/suspense film? Something to scare the crap out of a jaded viewer? Must be believeable: no neck-biters, werewolves, zombies etc.. Ghosts are ok!

On a previous thread I made this list:

The only three films that had such an effect on me that I still thought about them days after viewing them were "Spoorloos" (1988), "In A Glass Cage" (1987) and "White Lightnin" (2009).

here's a list of ten horror films I like:

Day of the Beast (1995)
The Shining (1980)
Halloween (1978)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Kill Baby Kill (1966)
Schramm: Into the Mind of a Serial Killer (1994)
Who Can Kill A Child? (1976)
Angst (1983)
Singapore Sling (1990)
In A Glass Cage (1987)

In a Glass Cage is just on that whole other level of psychotic terrifying. The average mind just doesn't come up with that kind of stuff.

Many thanks! Several here that I've not heard of...Glass Cage is the place to start.

So ghosts are "believeable" according to you?
That's interesting, in most cases vampyrs, w-wolves and zombies are classified along with ghosts as supernatural.

I've seen loads of horrors and thrillers, but the only film that has ever genuinely scared me was The Blair Witch Project. I know that a lot of people hated it, but I did find it scary. The ending was what really messed with me.

It made The Shining seem like softcore porn.

The original Japanese Ring films were quite scary, too. I'm not well versed in Asian horror but, after seeing The Ring, I'd guess that they do horror better than we do in the west.

No way, "J-Horror" is terrible. With a few exceptions ("Audition", "Sweet Home", etc.)

South Korea comes out with some good horror every now and then, though. But I think that South Korea's strength (along with Hong Kong and Japan) is in the area of violent crime thrillers, not horror.

Lately Western Europe has been going pretty strong with horror, better than what we've come out with in the USA recently, for the most part. Sweden, France, Spain and the UK have been putting out really good horror lately. A few good ones out of Russia and eastern Europe, too.

Os Cangaceiros, I vaguely remember an Asian horror film, possibly with subtitles, involving a car accident and photography, with a ghost. I'm betting you are familiar with it.

Menocchio, ghosts are potentially believable and, if they exist, arguably natural? The remaining menagerie are like orcs and hobgoblins: too much of a stretch!

I really liked The Grudge. Those're ghosts. I thought The Strangers was pretty terrifying. Last House on the Left is super freaky too, with no supernaturalism. My favourite horror film from the past few years has been Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween II. I found the visuals very poetic.

Wait Until Dark is a pretty awesome suspense film starring Audrey Hepburn. I've been wanting to see The Conversation with Gene Hackman again. It's not a horror film at all, but is a really interesting kind of suspense film.

I always find Oldboy to be supremely unsettling. Not really "horror", but quite a mindfuck.

As far as horror, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre has stuck in my head for years.

Shutter is the one, Os Cangaceiros-thanks! That's one that I found in the library a while back and forgot about.
