in what way is it claimed that trotsky was a counter-revolutionary? I would appreciate it if trots waited until after i receive some feedback to my answer before they start saying he wasnt and claiming DWS towards the ussrI can tell you some of what was done to discredit him:
The framing of Trotksy's Secretary in the War Commisariat, Butov, trying to link him (Butov) to the whites. Another was the revocation of Trotsky's Soviet citizenship at the same time a number of Mensheviks had their citizenship revoked, using the same official list. The intent was surrounding Trotsky with Mensheviks to show his counter revolutionary character.
These are just tiny bumps on the surface, bush league. Many many more, and more serious things are included. The biggest would be the show trials.
I suggest you check out http://www.marxists.org/history/etol/writers/sedov/works/red/ch02.htm

Most MLs/Stalinists/whatever you'd prefer to call them claim that Trotsky attempted to sabotage the USSR from the inside before he was deported. It's also generally claimed that his behavior in Mexico (ratting on other communists) was inacceptable, although I've also heard the communists he ratted out described as social democrats. (I don't know if there's any truth to that)

That's just chapter 2, and although it should help you with your question, the entire work is worth looking in to.
