Appropriately enough, Red Alert 2. My fleet of submarines just destroyed the Allied base at Pearl Harbor. I'm always playing The Sims 2, of course, and recently I started a Fire Red Omega game (Pokemon) where I'm trying to create a team of dragons.

I like the Romans. They're good at conquest in the ancient era and their perk makes it really easy to expand and develop cities quickly.
As a person who owns gods and kings, I would definitely recommend it. I would suggest waiting for a price drop though. As fun as it is, it just doesn't feel like it's worth 30 dollars.
I've recently started playing APB reloaded again. I got it for free off of steam around Christmas and got tired of it after a few months. I really like it because of the customization and the interesting gameplay. Despite offering overpowered weapons for insane amounts of IRL money, you can still do really well with the free ones, and the game is in no way "pay to win". You can also wear black hoodies, break store front windows, and have the title "anarchist" under your name.

I play like Civ 5 like I play Football Manager ("fuck yeah this team is nice I wanna make this team the top dog!"), I play with something not because of any of the perks the civ would have but because I wanna play with a certain civilization lol. That's why I usually play with like the Zulus or the Aztecs. Polynesian world domination is great too! That's why when I'm reading some history shit a sudden lightning of inspiration might strike me and I want to dominate the world with precisely the Chinese or with precisely England.
i'm not very much of a powergamer :( it's like this in rpg's too i don't think "hey this race/item has nice qualities" but my line of thinking goes more like "yiss dwarves are awesome i wanna dwarf" or "this armour isn't that great but it looks badass i want it"

Oh don't get my wrong, I'm like this too. I've always admired the Romans, even though their society was horrifying. I have my "I wanna be communist Mongolia and conquer the world" moments.I allow the stats to affect my gameplay but I resent the formulaic approach that people often take and this is why I don't play strategy games online.
In regards to RPGs, if a certain armor is ugly, but has better stats, i'll use it. I feel the same way on RPGs though. The first character I do is always basically me. I make it a human that looks like me and I make the decisions that I would make in that situation. I'm also usually a mage because mages are badass. After my first playthrough I make up characters to play. For example, a human hating elf, or an asshole rogue.

I usually play North European (i.e. Celts, English, Scandinavians) or Native (i.e. Iroquois, and... dammit they need to make a Cherokee civ for Civilization 6, when they make it...) civs when I play, probably because I relate to them more due to ancestry. I know in Civ 4 (or 3, I can't remember...) I liked the Zulus because they are badasses, and the Russians and Koreans are cool too.

I highly recommend the ruler creator DLC. I usually start games with a character named after myself because I'm super conceited and I want to start a dynasty that lasts for 10,000 years. Plus it's fun seeing my last name ranked above the Habsburgs and the Capets. Unfortunately I haven't achieved this yet. :(

You could probably get a Cherokee mod. They keep adding more and more native American civs so They might have the Cherokee next, though I think they would add plains Indians first.

Yeah, but the Cherokees had writing, agriculture, and permanent settlements so I think they should be one of the first on the list. Not saying other Nations don't deserve to be on there, just that in Civilization it seems logical.

They released a DLC to try and "fix" the ending. It isn't great but it's a bit better than the original (which I honestly didn't loathe that much).

That's a funny coincidence as that's exactly what I've been playing. I fucking love Medieval 2.. it's detailed in a way that Shogun 2, Empire, and Napoleon all missed out on. I'm really excited for Rome 2, especially since they're trying to design the game to be large scale, but playable on lower end hardware.
I'm doing a campaign as Milan right now. I decided to just grab Florence and then embark to the middle east. So far I've taken out Egypt and conquered Palestine and Sudan too.. still 40 more turns before the mongols show up. The Genoese crossbow militia should make them a lot easier to handle. Those guys are BEASTS.

I'm hoping that too. Rome and Medieval had a lot of fucking variety. Rome had the Roman, Greek, Macedonian, "Barbarian", Egytpian, Nomadic, and Eastern cultures; all with their own varieties of troops. Medieval managed to get quite a bit of variety too, but Empire was fucking boring. The only faction that really was unique was the Ottoman Empire. Don't even get me started on Shogun 2.. from a technical aspect it was the most polished and well done TW game yet, but it was so fucking boring. Every faction was the same. The only good things about the new games are the optimization and the streamlined empire management(which manages to avoid sacrificing depth). I still play Medieval 2 and Rome far more than I do Empire, Napoleon, or Shogun 2.
The dumbest thing about Rome is that you had to go into the INI and tweak it to play as factions like Thrace, Dacia, and the Macedonians. Why the hell wouldn't they let you play as Macedonian and remake Alexander's conquests? It seems like common sense.. Hopefully they do it right this time. I also thought the Roman factions were way too OP. Thankfully, I read that they're making it so there is only one Roman faction instead of four. The senate and rival families will be portrayed in some other way.

to be fair though, wasn't this true in real life? I know there was some variation (the Takada really were expert horsemen and the Oda used peasants and matchlocks more) but didn't most Sengoku armies rely on samurai footmen/horseman supported by peasant levies?

Played Black Mesa: Source until I put on noclip and was flying around the area with the big fan now the level doesn't load correctly and I'm stuck so I gave up. I don't have the money to buy games but Borderlands 2 looked ok so long as they made it easier this time around to decide which weapon drops were worth keeping. Been playing skyrim. My character is level 40, have my conjuration and enchanting at 100, got about 3 points into heavy armor and have ebony armor on. My character is feeling pretty OP now since destruction spells cost nothing to cast and I can summon two dremora lords to clean people up. Also have a mage follower that summons atronachs (as well as some dead thralls that summon their own atronachs when I roll with them). I'm thinking at this point I am just going to finish the main quest and start playing torchlight 2, maybe come back to it at another point.

They're following a pretty similar system that they tried with Shogun 2(which had fairly modest system requirements). They realize that the scale of the game actually makes the game more fun(try playing on huge scale, it's a lot more fun than normal), and that more people are playing on laptops. They want to be able to offer the full game experience to people that have lower end systems.
I played Milan yesterday. I did Scotland and Poland today but I gave up on all three pretty early. I've pretty much played every faction so It's hard for me to enjoy at this point. Maybe I'll try Hungary again...
Milan can be fun, you just have to focus on cities and it becomes pretty easy. If you want a challenge you should play as the Moors. As soon as you take Iberia all the Catholics will start trying to beat up on you. Also, the Byzantines can be fun to play.
You might also want to branch into mods like Stainless Steel or Broken Crescent.

I really fucking hate Day Z.. it seems really overrated.
First of all, from a technical standpoint it just runs like shit. I played the game intensely over a month, so I've got a pretty grasp on what it's all about. If you don't mind literally spending 95% of your game time simply running from point A to point B. It's boring as fuck. When you die, you lose everything too. I guess if someone doesn't really have a life, it can be fun because it means you can now pump a few dozen hours into getting back what you had before; but for people that have limited free time it sucks.
Project Zomboid seems to have a lot more promise, even though it's still in really early stages.

I'm a nerd hobbyist and so I love slow-burning games like that. The most fun I had was stalking a couple of players with a friend for an hour or so, failing in our assault and getting blasted, and then limping across Chernorus looking for blood packs, food, matches. It ended a few hours later with me lying prone on a hill doing overwatch while my friend crawled across the field into a convenience store, alone, at night, with around 900 zombies in the server.
He found matches, food, soda. Everything we needed.
We were kings in that game, tbh. People had helicopters and AKs and all that but we lived for weeks until we died from a glitch.
I am also the kind of nerd who plays ARMA 2 in a realism unit and 1/64 scale models and thinks civil war reenactments are neat.

It's fun the first, time then maybe the second time; then you realize that's all the game really has to offer. There's really not much to do tbh. The entire game is just kind of a gimmick once you get over the initial kick, but it is kind of a cool proof of concept.
Day Z could be a good game for boring old people like the ones who simulate real flights trans-oceanic flights in flight simulator though. They've certainly got the monotony down.

Lately I've been playing a shitload of Pokemon. Yes at 24 I'm still very much addicted to this series, and I'm not afraid to admit that. In my opinion, no other game has the replayability of Pokemon, except for maybe Star Ocean: The Second Story. I've spent thousands of hours of my life playing both of those games, knowing I could've been doing something more productive but still don't regret it.
I even bought a Gameboy Advance just so I could play Pokemon Red and Yellow after my N64 finally broke down. I miss having the N64, because you could play more efficiently on Dodrio mode.
Aside from that, I've been playing Zelda: Legend of the Spirit Tracks, which hasn't been impressive at all, though it's probably due to me constantly getting stuck on certain parts of the game. It started off as such an enjoyable game. But now it's really more frustrating than anything else. With Pokemon, I garner more entertainment since it's simple enough, but still very fun thanks to it's high replay value.

All the other Mount & Blade tryhards shit on it but as for me I think its fun as fuck. Nothing like dressing up like robin hood and slapping the shit out of a bunch of wannabe knight bozos who think they're hot shit dressed in their tin can outfits. Nobody in that game has any idea how to parry.

When I was playing with some friends we stole some poor bastards parked helicopter and messed around with it for a couple of hours. Then one of us was like "what does this button do" and jumped off in mid flight. After we retrieved his stuff the pilot fucking flew into the treeline while looking at the map. Sometimes I wonder why these people are my friends.

Napoleonic is fun but I'm disappointed in the lack of weapon variety. Out of M&B warband, M&B WFAS, and Napoleonic I probably play Napoleonic the most though.
Being in a line battle regiment is really fucking boring. They make you practice for like an hour, then you get to the battle and it takes another hour to set up, and then you get killed in a volley and you have to wait forever to respawn.

I'd suggest buying both of them though since ARMA 2 is hella good all around. You can buy it as "Combined Operations" on Steam.

I'm playing silent hunter 3. It's a u-boat simulator so I'm playing as ze Nazis. It's really good fun slow paced a lot of the time there's not a lot going on. But when you do come across a ship and begin the hunt it's so tense because you know one little slip up and you'll lose it. And if a destroyer and a couple of planes track your position the game of cat and mouse is reversed as you try to out maneuver them before your oxygen and underwater engines run out. Anyone who's seen Das Boot knows what I mean.

Just finished Bulletstorm...
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fill the shoes (http://popculturecoup.wordpress.com/2012/10/26/bulletstorm/#) of a cursing, dirty, rouge confederate space marine turned brigand? No, you say you have been such before (including the larcenous egotistic antagonist)? Well, in any case, Bulletstorm Is still a jaunty ride.
Starring a cast of lovable killers, most of whom are destroyed quite early in the game, the gameplay is an adrenaline fueled high featuring machine guns, a type of plasma whip, and the most powerful kicking ability ever seen anywhere in space. The combat is fast paced, challenging, yet fun if played on a lower difficulty setting, and more brutal than chopping people in half (welllllll….).
The twist here is that unlike other first person shooters which focus mainly on curb stomping some hapless alien Bulletstorm packs a punch in the story department. Though the plot doesn’t take you on an epic space opera of an adventure, like Mass Effect, it holds its own; several “whoa” twists, characters who change and have a personality behind their ruff body-builder body, and action-packed set pieces with more than a few memorable dialogue exchanges make Bulletstorm something to consider if searching for a game which is able to thrill and keep you guessing.

Well if you want an easy solution just dig out a massive area of soil underground and then make a separate shaft (for safety) down into the caverns. Discovering the caverns causes underground flora to start growing in any underground dirt tile.

Someone gifted me this indie game called A Valley Without Wind on Steam yesterday and I think it's pretty fun. I'm confident most people would hate it though.
As far as Witcher 1 and 2 goes, the 2nd one is pretty much a different game. Witcher 1 uses an awkwardly modified version of the combat system from Neverwinter Nights (same engine) but Witcher 2 has its own engine with a pretty good action oriented combat system. I'm with bcbm on it being annoying at times with the 'dark and edgy' bullshit interrupted by moments of lame comic relief and at times even preachiness. Typical fantasy game I guess.

Eh, I don't think the idea of elf slaves is unique to the point where someone can "claim" it. In fantasy settings, human chauvinism is almost as common as orcish bloodlust.
I also don't mind unnecessary swearing all that much. Every other word I say is fuck so it doesn't seem out of place or forced to me, but maybe that's just because I'm on the ass end of being a teenager and I still think swearing is cool. That being said, I don't like too much comic relief in my fantasy.
I'm gonna give it a try.

Just finished both Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Modern Warfare 2.
It’s no secret that during these last few years the Final Fantasy series has been in decline. This first became readily apparent upon the release of the thirteenth console entry and continues with the release of its sequel: XIII-2.
While in the beginning it starts out well enough, complete with high octane action and emotional transitions accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack, the gameplay quickly falls short. Still sticking with the ATB battlesystem (real time turn based) Square Enix has taken a step down in terms of strategy and shifted the sequel to more inclusive gameplay at the expense of depth. Many encounters can be solved with but only a couple of Paradigm Shifts, while only the most hardcore encounters reserve actual planning.
Looking past the combat, however, still not much redeeming content is to be found. While the plot, Lightning mysteriously disappearing and her sister-Serah-tasked with finding her somewhere in the mythical place of Valhalla, takes some interesting turns as the player is thrust from one time era to the next, one will quickly begin eye rolling when the characters repeat basic plot points established in the first hour of gameplay even as late as before the final encounter.
Looking past even this one will also be disappointed with the lack of originality and diversity. Though the game is about time travel and fixing the wrongs of the past (as expressed through paradoxes) the developers placed little effort into side quests instead content to merely take old environments and add a new shade of color while inserting some fetch quests. Such could have been an opportunity to deliver spectacular extra-areas and serve up some memorable events connected to the wider universe yet this path was never taken.
Even the conclusion and pace is off. Opting for a cheaply made cliffhanger Square Enix not only hashed out the strange plot but failed to show excellent character development. While several of the characters were of material which could have lent the game some heavy hitting emotional moments-the last human born on Earth and a immortal guardian tasked with protecting a Seeress-even these are poorly handled and convey little of what could have been had the developers taken the necessary time to flesh out the world and cast.
Indeed it seems that the PS3 generation of Final Fantasy games is doomed to mediocrity. While a third entry is planned-Lightning Returns-I have little hope that this entry will be any better than the previous two. With an amazing new tech demo recently released, a demo which resides within the Final Fantasy universe that aims for the PS4, the world glimpsed within of that brief video already seems vastly more interesting than the convoluted and poorly imagined realm of FFXIII.

Still loving Sid Meier's Pirates, though in my recent game I lose my favorite ship...'twas Henry Morgan's Large Frigate, which I named Enterprize. In this game, I tried to make all of the cities as prosperous as I could by attacking all of the pirates, protecting peace emissaries, sinking diplomats with ultimatums, destroying any ship I saw raiding a city. The Dutch became mad at me when I had to sink four of their privateers in quick successions. They had a 10,000 gold price on my head, so I cheerfully took over St. Martin and St. Eustatsius. Then, on seeing a Dutch raider attacking St. Kitts, went after it. I had him pinned between the rocks, the wind, and my ship, and I outgunned them three to one. I was headed for him, but he managed to get off one eight-gun broadside...and then I realized, I hadn't repaired my ship. The little worm sank my battleship! Alas for the good ship Enterprize. I've transferred my flag to the Elizabeth, which was the ship this fellow who had kidnapped a governor's daughter was using, and am building up an invasion army to take out the last Dutch stronghold. They'll rue the day they put a price on MY head. Once that's done, I'll marry the daughter and start another game, maybe one where I try to make all of my money through trade instead of sacking pirates and arresting embezzlers.

Yeah, now it doesn't feel like a real achievement when you (SPOILERS!!!!!) thrust your knife in the chest of Vaaz. It is also weird how you are apparently high everytime you fight one of the bosses, at least they added the same effects to the boss battles as when you were in the mushroom cave. It is also weird how you were able to kill Hoyt with just a knife while he was guarded by 10 armed men. But I do like the time you fight that evil giant while you're high on some sort of drink. And the rest is awesome. Except for the fact that the island gets really boring after you completed the game.{END OF SPOILERS!!!!)

I was disappointed with it because some magazine called it "Skyrim with guns" when it very clearly isn't. That isn't the publishers fault since it isn't their quote but I still feel slightly betrayed. It's a decent game but it's way too restricted to be called open world. Your choices are "do the main quest or do some boring ass side mission that offers no character development at all"
I guess the moral of the story is, If you want to play Skyrim with guns, just play fallout 3/New Vegas.
Anyway, I've been following the progress of this game since yesterday. It looks promising.

Assassins Creed 3 ... It is okay I guess, altough it does not nearly have the same feeling as the first ones. Those were quite spectacular and original in my eyes then. The vast open landscapes, the tens of AI's doing their business, the fact that you could get onto everything you saw. Now we arrive at part 4 it has lost it's 'new-ness' I guess. And I dislike how the games are more centered around the characters as the first one. And aliens.. what the fuck?!

I am thinking about getting back into Dead Island. I was all the way in the prison point of the game and I got to the part where you meet up with the prisoner at his cell who's trapped or something and help him not get killed and he kept running way ahead of me and getting killed and I gave up. There's no safe rooms or health kits anywhere and it just sucks.
Overall I really liked the game a lot. There were a lot of ways to get killed and I thought it was a pretty tough game but it doesn't overwhelm you with shit, it keeps the ambiance, and it offers you a lot of different options to run, get to a better fighting location, hide, etc.. I spent much of the collapsed slum district levels just jumping from car to car to dumpster (because I was scared of screaming fast zombies).

Have you seen the multiplayer beta? (was beta a bit of time ago when I had internet and I would be playing it now if I could afford internet). It looked like a lot of fun just open world doing whatever you want and trolling people.
Also you should consider starting a new Skyrim character with mods running and with god mode on. I was pretty dissapointed with Aliens: Colonial Marines. That's a game as an Aliens fan i had been waiting for since i first read about it back in 2008, (technically when i heard it was supposed to be a ps2 game back in 2006). It seems the development was a trainwreck according to inside sources. There's even talk that Gearbox Software may have embezzled money given to them from SEGA to make ACM and instead used most of it on Borderlands 2! Apparently Gearbox also outsourced the game to another developer when they were the ones who were supposed to be developing the game.
Check this out.
http://kotaku.com/5984024/the-aliens-colonial-marines-demo-looked-great-the-actual-game-not-so-much
The demo video that was shown at E3 is definitely what sparked my interest thinking someone would finally do the Aliens franchise justice and provide an experience aliens fans always dreamed of. I remember seeing epic battles with xenomorphs crawling outta the vents, and ceiling tiles, and floors, marines getting torn up by the xenos.
Looked very promising. There's speculation that what was shown at E3 may have just been very well put together CGI and scripted to make it look like it was a demo being showcased. Although i guess we won't ever know unless Gearbox makes a statement, so far they've been quiet and CEO Randy Pitchford is acting like nothing has happened and giving out Shift codes for BL2 and ignoring everyone asking him why he obviously did a bait and switch and sold people an unfinished video game and hyped it up like it was the second coming of christ or something. :scared:
oh and this was an interesting read, talk about a crazy story. It just keeps getting more and more interesting haha.

ArmA 3 Alpha version. If you liked ArmA 2, you will absolutely love this! It is like ArmA 2 with better graphics and no clumsy control, which is the greatest improvement in my eyes. Also, the vehicles drive better now and they adjusted the flying, but I am not sure wether I like that.
I also did some diving. I was alright, but still a bit buggy. But that is no doubt because it is still in Alpha. Same for the ragdoll effects. If you shoot a running guy, it looks natural, but if you shoot a guy standing still it looks silly.
In alpha, there is only a limited amount of factions, soldiers and vehicles, but what I saw so far looks good. The only thing I dislike is the setting (this might not be the right time to publish a military simulator where NATO and Iran are opponents...). The only thing I am worried about is too little innovation, but even with no innovation at all (besides improved graphics, control and ragdoll effects) I will spend DAYS at this game. So far I enjoyed it a lot.

I decided to campaign through Advance Wars again. It was great nostolgia. Kind of blows my mind not as many people are aware of this franchise. It's one of my favorites.
Now I plan on playing one of my favorite games of all time, Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

Hmm, not too big on the futuristic stuff, or the game as a whole really. Although the inclusion of historical figures like Jonas Savimbi and Noriega is amusing.
The main villain as some kind of drug-trafficker-turned-quasi-left wing radical who leads an stateless insurrectionary army is kind of fun, too.

Started L.A. Noire again. Beautiful game, but the driving sequences tell me I'm more Mad Max than Hercule Poirot.

I have been playing only Darkest Hour, because my graphics board is broken and I have to use the old one, and it can only handle paradox games. I haven't played CoD in ages.

IT's been a while since I played any video game, I need to play Kaiserreich again but time zones are annoying, and all my friends are back in France, given the importance of the works I'm gonna have to do in the next few weeks it's probably a good thing.

i had never played it before, it is pretty fun. doing the campaign right now, alternating between being a corrupt fascist megalomaniac and a do-gooder socialist type. gonna try and experiment with some other builds i think. i wish that they let you set up the starting city though, having industrial crap and shacks and farms in my downtown is totally ruining my city planning:lol:

i spent one game just building a massive military and then assasinating and jailing random people to piss them off, i think it was mostly 'political opponents' that i would target. the idea was to try to make a large continuous rebellion. there were some major battles of 20 on 20 at times.

Just finished Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Loved that game the entire way to the end, now I feel empty after finishing it. Especially since the final boss was easier than a few of the bosses before it.

Not a video game, but my friends and I got together to do a world-building and character rolling session for a Burning Wheel game. I'm liking this system way, way more than Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, etc.
Combat's way more decisive and visceral with every weapon being hella good at wrecking your shit no matter what. Instead of levels, you pick "lifepaths" for your character at creation, saying like he was just a village kid for 10 years, an apprentice for seven, then conscripted into the village guard until he was promoted to a sergeant, which gives your guy access to a list of skills and character traits. Then you have to write down a couple of short "beliefs" and instincts for your guy, which the GM sets out to challenge overtly throughout the adventure.
You also get rewarded for playing your beliefs, traits, and instincts "to the hilt", especially when it's most inconvenient for you or your party.
its p. cool
