Comrades,

I work in the film industry -- I am looking for texts by key marxist thinkers who may be able to influence by understanding of aesthetics, form, etc. Having recently happened upon The Frankfurt School, I am now reading a book by The Radical Thinkers Series called 'Aesthetics and Politics'. I am also reading a book by Eisenstein.

I am wondering if any of you would have books, films, etc. to recommend. Thanks

Try Marxist poet and playright, Bertold Brecht, who wrote about aesthetics in the theatre. I'm not sure if his work is easy to find free on the internet but here's a taste of what he has to say:

Aesthetics and Politics is a great book, but its primary focus is literary.

For something a little more contemporary I'd check out David E. James. He's written primarily on Asian and American film & video, including experimental, punk and porn.

Ubuweb has tonnes of fantastic experimental film and documentaries. http://www.ubu.com/film/

Robin Woods was a gay marxist film scholar, best known for writing on Hitchcock. I've never read him, but he comes very highly recommended.

Have you read The Mass Psychology of Fascism by Wilhelm Reich?
