View Full Version : American Dream... what a joke!

I am in 11th grade, and I thought that the pro-America & pro-Christian stuff was going to be like years prior, just the Pledge of Allegiance and other pointless and stuff that I don't give a crap about. Well, that shit is different. In my English class, we have to do a project about the American Dream and how it exists. Also, she played some dumbass Christian rock and read a speech from John Winthrop, who said that he wanted for it to be a Theocracy in America. Furthermore, she says that many people around the world want to come here (). Anyways, what do you guys think about this "American Dream" B.S.?
Also, my US History (coughwhitewashingofusgenocideofnativesandblacksco ughcough) teacher said that your either Liberal or Conservative, and that Romney and Obama are extremely different.:laugh::laugh:

It sounds like your teacher has been reading too many Horatio Alger stories. Sadly, your real education wont begin until you go to College - high school is a pure indoctrination session and looking back on it now, at age 34, I realize I didn't learn jack shit back then.
You COULD do an American Nightmare paper just to spite her, lol, which would demonstrate that you can think critically, but that may end up hurting you, since critical thinking isnt encouraged or taught until you go to college or you do your own self-research. Probably just do it the way she wants you to, since it is obvious you already have a head on your shoulders and know its complete BS.

Yeah, I love that quote. But I don't want to fail because the only way I can get into college is through scholarships and loans, and I'd rather scholarships! Damn bourgeoisie system, either conform or be broke. If that wasn't a factor I would absolutely laugh at the prospect of doing the project.

Yeah, indoctrination is heavy. Someone at my school thought Hitler was a Communist!
It only takes a little research into the history of the Holocaust to find out about how Communists were sent to camps too. :glare:

I didn't get a good education in history until my senior year in high school, when we read A Peoples' History of the United State by Howard Zinn, and focused largely on Latin American history (which is full of examples of American imperialism). My teacher was a self-described communist and hung up a Che Guevara poster on the wall
Regarding this assignment, be critical. Write about the American Nightmare; or alternatively, you could talk about how the "American Dream" is not a reality for so many Americans.

Reminds me of when the Texas board of education recently tried to rewrite history, by giving a more conservative taint to school textbooks - including replacing "imperialism" with "expansionism", portraying the NRA and conservatives in a positive light as pillars of America, emphasizing the "Christian nation" myth, etc... (I don't know if they actually went through with it in the end)

"American nightmare" sounds obnoxious as fuck don't use it. But yeah, don't use the thing to be your commie soapbox, it will not convince people to go "america is bad", but focus on the actual problems and keep it as basic as possible. Don't try to sneak in blatantly commie viewpoints or shit about how it's a manufactured concept; people will not give a shit or they will think you're a conspiracy theorist and most of all, it flies well over the level of detail they've received in high school history. I'd rather just dig up some statistics on poverty and hunger in US today and maybe shit like that, problems nobody can dispute are problems in the first place. It's a high school representation and that way you are more likely to get positive response from people than being that communist kid. High school is not really the stage for agitation, education or whatever, just making them ask some very basic questions should be enough and considered a small victory.

Such as
"why are the poor denied healthcare if they can't pay?"
"why is there so much crime in America (where drugs are illegal, and jail sentences are harsh), while in northern Europe (where in many countries drugs are legal, crime rehabilitation is emphasized, etc.) it's almost nonexistent?"

In all seriousness though, I would recommend just writing up some bullshit paper filled basically with the kind of shit she basically wants to hear (the american dream is good the america dream is a reality blah blah blah) and get it over with. The important part is that you know its bullshit and why its bullshit.
If you want to do a piece why the american dream is BS, do it on your own time.
IMO, when it comes to people like that (Especially ones that hold an illusion of power) you're not going to change their minds, so don't bother. I've learned that the hard way. And doing shit just to spite her for her ignorance is just going to get you in trouble, now and later.
Being a Marxist is not like being a christian missionary. You don't HAVE to try to convert everyone you meet. Karl Marx is not going to come out of the sky and beat you over the head with a massive stone copy of Das Kapital or fry you with revolutionary lightning bolts for choosing to back down from a fight you have no chance on winning anyway.
... unless of course you have to present it in front of the whole class. That's another story (maybe)...

You could legitimately do this one if you ask her before hand if you are allowed to do a project on the origins of the concept. Being that your cherokee her "I'm a teacher so I can't be mean to the colored kid (as much as she'd like to be)" might kick in and you could get away with it while simutaneously informing your classmates that the American Dream an invented concept and wasn't some god ordained fact of life or something.

Oh wow, is it really that bad? I'm not so learned on American education besides the want for mass privatisation and that revolting pledge of allegiance they hit children with. Would you be able to elaborate on how biased some of these history classes are? (The worst I'd ever had was when my history teacher proclaimed that Communism was a ploy to take over the world, centered around everyone becoming working-class slaves to a mustached stalinoid dynasty )
On topic, the American Dream is a load of unrealistic nonsense, and I advise you to actually challenge your teacher on these points with solid evidence to the contrary. Sure, it won't make your classmates go 'Capitalism is horrid, raise the red flag of rrrrrrrrrrrevolution!', but it will probably have the effect of them taking what your teacher says with a grain of salt.

I'd just give my life story about how my family fled to America from a war torn nation only to end up bankrupt and struggling to make ends meet, to the point we moved back to Serbia, while my father goes back and forth driving a truck for six months at a time without seeing his family in order to send us money. We figured if we are going to be poor we may as well be poor here where we own our house and money from abroad is worth a bit more.

Not really. Some people have found success. I'll grant you that. And politically, the United States is more free than, say, some other countries. I'll grant you that.
But the unfortunate reality is that for many Americans, a vicious cycle of poverty persists through the generations. Many Americans don't know where their next meal will come from; or when they'll be able to see a doctor. Or how they'll pay for college.
And all of this despite the fact that this country [the U.S.A] has more resources and more wealth than any other country on the planet. How much wealth do we have locked up in the hands of a few? What could we achieve with that? Look around you: how "hard" are the 1% working, as they make money off of money and outsource jobs?
No. American capitalism is far from being a genuine meritocracy - capitalism will never, never can be, a genuine meritocracy. And you forget: part of the reason why "America is so great" is the exploitation of the rest of the world. What about their American Dream?

In all seriousness though, I would recommend just writing up some bullshit paper filled basically with the kind of shit she basically wants to hear (the american dream is good the america dream is a reality blah blah blah) and get it over with. The important part is that you know its bullshit and why its bullshit.
Nah some things are worth fucking with yo.

I recently returned from a month-long expedition, if you will, to the United States. Most of the neighborhoods consisted of run-down, rotting, decaying and broken houses, with garbage and dirt and trash riddling the streets and a horrible smell of rotting garbage and dog piss penetrating your nose. These 46 million people of yours that live under the poverty line are everything but transparent.
This is your american dream and your american opportunity.
Yeah but they didn't strive hard enough, you see?
(disregarding the fact that other concrete individuals would live such lives if these strived hard enough, of course)
It's useless really. The mere fact that there isn't a legally fixed document, backed by violence and/or the threat of it, preventing certain groups of people from occupying a position is enough. There is opportunity alas!

Yeah, I'm in 11 grade too. They teach jack-shit. My school teaches that Manifest Destiny was a good thing and that it led the "heroic spread west". What total Bourgeois bullshit, thousands of Mexicans and Natives died because of that stupidity!
So what were the Mexicans doing there? Or are they exempt from condemnation for a "heroic move" north?

Because Mexicans came from Europe and colonized it, right?

Dude what the fuck is that supposed to mean. What were the Armenians doing in Turkey? The gypsies in Eastern Europe? The Jews in Germany? Massacring a populace or ethnically cleansing an area isn't fucking acceptable, regardless of what you call it.

The Armenians, actually, were mostly in Armenia, which then encompassed a considerable part of Eastern Anatolia, though the Ottomans preferred to pretend they were in Turkey, like they prefer to call the Kurds "Mountain Turks". What we call today "Armenia" was just Eastern Armenia/Russian Armenia back then.

... Africans in South Africa, Palestinians in Israel, Natives in the Americas, Aboriginals in Australia, and Scots, the Irish, and the Welsh of Great Britain. Just adding on to your list.
